76ers sign Eric Gordon

The Philadelphia 76ers have signed free agent guard Eric Gordon, NBA insider Shams Charania was among the first to report Sunday evening.

Gordon’s contract will be for the minimum. For players with 10-plus years of service time, the deal will be worth $3.3 million, though it will only count for $2.1 million against the cap.

He spent last season with the Phoenix Suns, averaging 11.0 points on 44.3 percent shooting, including 37.8 percent from 3-point range and 79.7 percent from the charity stripe. The 35-year-old is going to be entering his 17th season.

He has played for four other organizations throughout his career, including the Houston Rockets when now-Sixers president Daryl Morey was the general manager in Houston. Gordon won sixth man of the year in his first season with the Rockets in 2016-17 and finished second in that respective voting in 2017-18.

The 76ers have just six players on their roster: Joel Embiid, Paul Reed, rookie Jared McCain, Ricky Council IV and Andre Drummond, who signed a two-year deal Sunday evening. They still have over $50 million in projected cap space left, per Spotrac. They are projected to be the frontrunner in the Paul George sweepstakes, which will eat up most of that cap space. Once that disappears, they’ll be able to re-sign a few of their own free agents, if need be–including Buddy Hield, De’Anthony Melton and Tyrese Maxey.

Getting as many floor spacers around Joel Embiid is paramount, though Gordon is a lot more seasoned than his peers. Regardless, it will be interesting to see how Morey conducts the rest of the roster outside of adding Gordon, Drummond and possibly George.
