76ers Match Offer Sheet For Paul Reed
The Philadelphia 76ers now have three backup centers. I’m not sure why that’s necessary but this is the world Daryl Morey has created. Morey already handed out deals to Mo Bamba and Montrezl Harrell. After Utah signed Paul Reed to an offer sheet, Philadelphia has decided that they will match for the former DePaul product.
Adrian Wojnarowski was the first to report the news:
“The Philadelphia 76ers have matched restricted free agent forward Paul Reed’s three-year, $23 million offer sheet with the Utah Jazz and will retain him, sources told ESPN on Sunday night.”
“Reed signed the offer sheet on Saturday morning, and the Sixers waited until 90 minutes prior to the 11:59 p.m. ET Sunday deadline to inform Utah that they matched the sheet. Reed has veto power on any trade and can’t be moved to Utah for a full year.”
The offer sheet that Utah set up also has really weird incentives. If the 76ers win a single round of the playoffs, Reed’s contract becomes fully guaranteed for the final two years. Of course, Philly was much more likely to do just that than Utah would have been. Factor in the East is significantly easier than the West too. Utah likely won’t win a round in the playoffs even if they do make it. It’s times like this when I really miss Danny Ainge.
Reed, 24, averaged 4.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 0.7 blocks and 0.7 steals in just 10.9 minutes per game last season. Reed was selected in the second round of the 2020 NBA Draft.
