49ers Plan To Release Javon Hargrave

Someone needs to take the keys away from John Lynch (and Kyle Shanahan in terms of personnel) because they are killing this San Francisco roster. The 49ers gave Javon Hargrave $84 million in 2023. Less than two years later they are releasing him.

The former South Carolina State defensive tackle will be designated as a post-June 1 cut this offseason. Lynch confirmed to the media that is the plan but also said they may try to re-sign him.

“Would we be interested in having him? Of course,” Lynch said, via Matt Maiocco of NBCSpotsBayArea.com. “Is that something we’ve come to an agreement on and is it something that fits in our plans? We’ll see.”

Hargrave, 32 in February, had seven sacks for San Fran in 2023. He’s still a damn good player. Just suffered a torn triceps injury early in the 2024 season. Not sure how this move makes sense for that reason. So you’re cutting the guy after the season because he got hurt but will be totally fine in 2025? Why sign him to that contract if that’s the way you’re going to play it?

Sorry, not sorry, but this move makes no sense. Not a lick of sense. The 49ers will take on $8.6 million in dead money in 2025 and $17.485 million in 2026. They save $2.85 million in space. I’m not making that up. That’s the real number for what San Fran saved by cutting a premium DT.

If money is that tight right now in 49ers land… maybe you want to let Brock Purdy go instead of paying him everything so that you have to further destroy the roster. Food for thought.
