Hi. We’re keeping things moving and moving to the NL East breakout stars for the upcoming 2025 MLB Season. We already hit the AL East, AL Central, and AL West so if you don’t know what we’re going for by now… work on your reading comprehension skills.
Ok… I’m just going to get to the list now.
Atlanta Braves: Spencer Schwellenbach
The Braves have had a ton of success hitting on their draft picks on the pitching side of things. You know exactly who I’m talking about. Spencer Strider and Bryce Elder ring any bells? Schwellenbach could be next after showing some flashes as a rookie. The former Braves second round pick in 2021 posted a 3.35 ERA in 21 starts a season ago.
What if we have another level to climb? Even a year ago, he was in the 96th percentile in chase%, 95th percentile in walk rate, and the 90th percentile in barrel%. Usually a pretty good baseline for maintaining success. Maybe that starts with throwing that nasty splitter more. Just don’t be surprised if he becomes a capable starter in the Braves rotation.
Miami Marlins: Xavier Edwards
This might be a cheat code answer but the Marlins are so boring that you have to look for any reasons to watch this team. In 70 games last year, Edwards hit .328 with a 124 OPS+. Oh, and that’s with 31 steals in 265 at-bats.
Again, the Marlins suck. I can’t imagine willingly watching a team that continues to not care about winning and is constantly in rebuild mode. Edwards is one player to maybe make you think about watching this team. The former Padres high draft pick looks like he will become a hit.
New York Mets: Luisangel Acuña
The Max Scherzer trade just might turn into the gift that keeps on giving. Billy Eppler didn’t get much right during his time with the Mets but he deserves credit for stealing Acuña away from Texas. He’s Ronald’s younger brother. Not as big but has that same electric playing style. I’d imagine he’s a factor with the Mets in some way. A .966 OPS during a brief debut a year ago was a pretty nice tease of what’s to come.
Philadelphia Phillies: Justin Crawford
I might be a year or two early on this one but I can’t stress the importance of what Crawford means to this team. The one thing the Phillies need more than anything is a centerfielder with speed. Their corner outfielders are slugs (Schwarber and Castellanos). If Justin can be anything like his dad Carl (Rays version) the Phillies might have their missing piece to get over the top.
Washington Nationals: Dylan Crews
We’ve already seen what Paul Skenes is made of at the MLB level. What about his former LSU teammate, Dylan Crews? Heading into his age 23 season, it’s go time for Crews to prove he can live up to his former draft status. I’m not sure the power numbers will ever be there but he has a ton of potential to be a stable lead-off on base guy with plus athleticism for years to come.
