2025 MLB Draft Profile: Kayson Cunningham

Hit: 60 | Power: 45 | Run: 60 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 55

Continuing these MLB Draft profiles as we get to yet another middle infielder. This time, with 18-year-old Kayson Cunningham from Texas. Boasting one of the best hit tools in the draft, there is a lot to like with Kayson Cunningham. Let’s find out why that is.

Let’s start with the reason he is going to be drafted in the first round: the hit tool. At 60, many scouts believe Cunningham is the best pure hitter in this draft. Proven when he hit .417 for the under-18 Team USA team.

He has incredible bat and barrel control and does a great job of not chasing pitches and staying within the zone. He overall shows a great understanding of the strike zone and uses that discipline to better hunt for his pitch. Using his smooth left-handed swing to allow his hands to get through the zone quickly enough.

Allowing him to show the ability to hit for power to all parts of the field. Though not the biggest and strongest, Kayson Cunningham’s bat speed and discipline should be enough for him to generate some sneaky pop at higher levels.

Cunningham just barrels baseball and very often at that. He keeps that up while putting on a little weight and you Cunningham could very soon be a problem for MLB pitchers.

At just 18 years old, there is more than enough time for Cunningham to get better and develop into the best version of himself. Which is a middle infielder offering you lots of offensive upside, even if the power isn’t ever fully there.

He also projects to be a major problem on the basepaths. With a 60 run grade, swiping bags shouldn’t ever be a problem for the speedy Kayson Cunningham. Adding to the versatility a guy like Cunningham would bring you.

Cunningham, so far, has been able to use that seed and range to hold down shortstop. But at his weight and size, I feel like he projects better as a second baseman with a lot of offensive upside.

Not to say he can’t play short. In fact, the team that drafts him will likely start by playing him at short. It is a more valuable position and plugs a bigger hole for most teams. He shows a good feel for the position, so maybe he needs to get a little bit bigger.

Regardless of what position Kauyson Cunningham decides to play, he projects to be one of the better hitters coming out of this draft class. He is very young, but still, I imagine he will make easy work of the lower levels.

A lot of different tools to love with Kayson Cunningham. That hit tool, paired with the speed, is what many teams are looking for right now. Hoping power can and will come in due time. Guys like Corbin Carrol and Pete Crow Armstrong come to mind.

I don’t think Cunningham will ever have that kind of power, but I don’t think it will matter. He will excel in everything else on the field, so power will just become an added bonus. He may never be the superstar that carries the team, but rather the defensive glue guy the championship team can’t go without.
