It’s one of my favorite times of year, the MLB draft, where teams get the chance to add prospects we will hopefully soon be talking about. Although this draft may not include some of the big-name firepower we’ve seen in years past, there are still plenty of guys to get excited about heading into this year. First on that list is the current favorite to be the first pick, Ethan Holliday.
Brother to Jackson Holliday, Jackson has often admitted that Ethan is better than he was at this stage in their careers. Whether that’s true remains to be seen as Ethan Holliday prepares for baseball at Oklahoma State.
What is clear is that Ethan’s 6-foot-4 frame more closely resembles his father and should allow him to develop some real power at the next levels. Even now, he’s able to use the big frame to seamlessly generate power with his elite bat speed. Giving him the 50 hit tool with 65 power.
Just look at that swing, man. A thing of beauty. Gives me serious Robinson Cano vibes the way he effortlessly gets the barrel through the zone and generates power. It should be a thing of beauty at the MLB level.
Despite his big frame, Ethan Holliday is still able to move quite well. Not a strength of his, but certainly not a liability in his game either. The defense, while not elite, should be more than good enough if he can turn into the slugger he’s supposed to be.
He plays both third base and second, but I imagine he grades out better as a third baseman. If for no other reason than his size. I mean, how many 6-foot-4 second basemen have you heard of? The glove could play at third with Holliday already having the power it takes to be a staple at that position.
Overall, a lot to like with Ethan Holliday. A smooth swinging power-hitting lefty? Have we ever seen that succeed in Major League Baseball? Jokes aside, Holliday has some great hitting tools that could see him shoot through the minors like his brother. Like father, like son, like son am I right?
