Before we get to the 2025 East-West Shrine Bowl Practice Notes for day two on the East team, I hope you don’t mind but I have to go into storytime mode.
I’ll be totally honest with you; I left early for the gym. The broadcast is so brutal to listen to that I couldn’t take it any longer. I needed to get some frustration out. I also don’t feel guilty about it at all because Shane Bowen ran a significantly better practice for the West team than the East team. The East team practice was far less intense. Curious to see if that translates to gameday. Plus, we have the film, which I plan to dig into much deeper. I missed maybe the last hour if that of the East team today.
The last two days, I’m going to try muting it and seeing how that goes because this Eric Warfield and Mark Clayton duo is truly the worst broadcasting set I’ve ever heard in my life regardless of the sport. They’re so bad my eyeballs are literally bleeding. If you haven’t seen it live, the best way to describe it is… Warfield and Clayton getting too horny about the good ole days when they were a player. I’m not sure who needs to hear that but this event isn’t about them. I can’t imagine having an ego so big that as a broadcaster, you spent literally 99% of the time talking about your playing days while saying NOTHING about the players who are actually on the field.
I’m not even joking. Go back through the footage. You can’t find a time where they even talk about what’s happening on the field. Never a time where they give valuable insight on a specific player during the drills. It’s next level bad. They’re clearly not prepared or educated on any of these guys. It’s so bad that I genuinely question if they’re trolling and purposely hired the worst people possible. I don’t want to. know what they’re paying them to do this. I hope it’s free vouchers at whatever hotel they’re staying at. Anything more and it’s way too much.
I don’t know if I would call this a conversation but Shawne Merriman has commented on my stuff and is now aware of the problem. I don’t know why nobody told him this sooner but if Trey has to be the bad guy by being honest… so be it.
By the way, what I should have included in the video is that if I was a player in this event, I would be pissed. The broadcaster’s job is to create some buzz and entertainment on these guys. Beyond the fact that they’re so boring and monotone, they can barely identify who’s even on the field.
I tried to access the broadcast after the fact to jot down notes after taking a much needed gym break. I’m not sure if I was doing it wrong but I couldn’t get in. No fast-forward or rewind button either.
Long story short; you’re getting the bare bones minimum here with one last reminder that we are currently grinding through the tape and those posts will follow.
Quarterbacks:
Kyle McCord is clearly the best quarterback here but Cam Miller made some real throws today. As I said last time, he’s overachiever vibes but just executing the easy stuff, which not everybody does during this event, he thrived.
Running Backs:
Raheim Sanders is legit. Just the footwork is there, especially for a bigger back. He’s NFL good. Just not sure how NFL good yet. But he will be something.
Eye level terrible on this Arizona back. Jacory Croskey-Merritt is constantly looking at the bags with his eye level down. Back that doesn’t trust his vision. It’s not going to work.
Wide Receivers:
KeAndre Lambert-Smith deserves his flowers. He’s in that Jahan Dotson mold but he made some plays to really high point the ball. Great to see a guy like him make tough catches.
Thought Jackson Meeks had some moments. Doesn’t look slow either.
Tight End:
The Syracuse guys are standing out. This tight end is something. He’s a lump of clay and if he really figures it out… look out.
Offensive Line:
Esa Pole. Keeps doing the damn thing. Physically not blowing you away but he’s a good football player who will make a roster.
Defensive Line:
Johnny Walker just bending around the bags he’s different from the rest of the group.
JJ Pegues gets after it. He’s just built differently from a vast majority of the guys here.
Syracuse is the theme.
Linebackers:
Francisco Mauigoa I’m a huge fan of. He made some wow plays in the team setting. There’s something about him from a physical aspect that is impressive. Has instincts.
Cornerbacks:
Cobee Bryant. Dude is small but competes. You can tell he’s talking trash out there and confident too. He’s been a standout. Ball awareness and has the necessary movement skills.
