2024 NL Central Breakout Stars
This series is something I try to do every single year. Over the next six days, we will go division by division to find the breakout stars across MLB. To me, there is just nothing more exciting than properly tracking the next young group of players to make an impact at the MLB level. Our track record of identifying the next up-and-comers has been pretty strong over the years. To start things off, let’s go over your 2024 NL Central Breakout Stars (one per team)!
Chicago Cubs (Christopher Morel)
When the Cubs traded for Nick Madrigal, for some reason I thought he was going to be the second baseman of the future in Chicago. It’s going to end up being Christopher Morel. Heading into year three, Morel took a big jump in year two. He was a .247 hitter with 26 homers. If I get one more leap, is .270 and 35 homers in there somewhere? If so, that’s one of the better second basemen in the sport. Heading into his age 25 season, let’s see what happens.
Cincinnati Reds (Elly De La Cruz)
Some would argue that the breakout has already happened here but now we’re going to get to see it for a full season. It should be fireworks. Also, De La Cruz slowed down big time in the second half and only finished with a .235 clip. He’s just scratching the surface and 2024 should be the year we see it click.
Milwaukee Brewers (Jackson Chourio)
The Brewers already gave Jackson Chourio $82 million and he hasn’t played a game at the MLB level yet. If that doesn’t tell you something then you may just have a faulty brain. Should be a fun player to watch for many years. Just a matter of if it happens this year or not.
Pittsburgh Pirates (Oneil Cruz)
This one was supposed to happen already but the injury bug decided to step in. The talent here is obvious. Had ridiculous power and arm strength. Hopefully, this is the year it all comes together.
St. Louis Cardinals (Jordan Walker)
The Cardinals are a mess but fans should legitimately be excited about Jordan Walker. 6-foot-6, 250 with plus bat-to-ball skills and crazy power potential. Had a nice showing as a rookie last year. The homer numbers could start to become eye-popping in the near future. A bat to truly be excited about.
