The San Jose Sharks are right in the middle of their rebuild, and have an interesting offseason ahead. As the worst regular season team in hockey, they have earned a special title. They are the first team we are looking at for a new series called the NHL Offseason Preview. This Summer we are looking to dive into all 32 NHL teams and take a guess at what kind of moves they will make. Whether it’s trades, signings, non-moves, draft picks, or more.
The most obvious move Mike Grier will make is drafting BU stud Macklin Celebrini first overall at the end of the month in the Draft. The Canadian prospect could very well be joined by a college rival in San Jose. BC standout Will Smith had an excellent collegiate season and signed an ELC last month. The Sharks are far from a finished product but finally have something to look forward to in the form of young talent. Take a look at how I tried to take a stab at their offseason:
You will see that one of the ideas mentioned here was a reunion with former franchise star Joe Pavelski. That unfortunately not be happening as the veteran forward announced plans to step aside from hockey and retire. Regardless, they have work to do. Despite having a lot of cap space, all three of their salary retention slots are currently occupied by long-term deals. That hampers their ability to make really flexible moves but what do you think? There’s obviously some rough patches in my video and I promise they will get better and better moving forward.
