It’s official: The NBA will likely be moving to a two-night NBA draft format, ESPN Adrian Wojnarowski reported last week.
This development has been talked about before and the league was moving in this direction. I wrote about this scenario back in December when Adam Silver mentioned a two-night NBA Draft. It seems like this will be the case in April with the NBA finalizing plans for the 2024 NBA Draft.
There are a lot of benefits to a two-night NBA Draft. The draft only happens once a year so it should be a highly anticipated event.
However, it feels like the NBA only hypes up the lottery picks which are the first 15 picks in a draft. A two-night draft will allow the NBA to place some importance on second-round picks, and the extra day not only gives fans more time to learn about more prospects. More importantly, it gives teams the chance to breathe before their second-round selections. The NBA Draft as a one-night affair is a hectic and quick event, so now, teams will be able to regroup after round one and hopefully hit on more second-round picks.
This new format could be huge for teams because as people have seen over recent years the second round can be a gold mine for franchise players. There have been recent second-round stars such as Nikola Jokic, Khris Middleton and Draymond Green. However, the second round of the NBA Draft has been lucrative throughout history with players such as Manu Ginobili, Dennis Rodman, Marc Gasol and Jeff Hornacek.
This new format for the 2024 NBA Draft will be an interesting test run and the format may very well stick for future drafts.
The NBA is hoping the new NBA draft format will be a success among fans and teams. It will be interesting to see if more teams hit on second-round picks this year. It will obviously take time to see the success rate of the 2024 draft beat the past drafts, but it would make sense that an extra day and extra time for teams to reset their draft boards could bring better results.
Also, a multiple-day draft is not a new concept. The NFL has had a multiple-day draft for years and they seem to have the correct formula. The NFL not only advertises their draft at a top-notch level, but the late rounds in the draft are still extremely important for teams. It will be exciting to see the new draft format in action. Also, with a less-hyped-up first round than in recent years, the second round can be a huge factor for the 2024 NBA draft.
