Wednesday is the last day for the 2024 MLB Winter Meetings in Dallas, Texas, which means the Rule 5 Draft took place! Let’s dive into the results!
The Rule 5 Draft happens every year, where prospects are snagged by other teams to help pave their way to potentially play in the big leagues.
How it works is that any players who are 18-years-old or younger (at the time of signing) that have played five professional seasons, 19-years-old or older with four pro seasons that have not yet been added to their team’s 40-man roster are eligible for what’s called the Rule 5 draft.
Teams that have at least one open 40-man roster slot can select these players and immediately add them to their 40-man. They have to keep them there for the entire 2025 season or be placed on waivers. That doesn’t mean every club with an open 40-man slot will pick players. But if they do, however, they have to pay the former club $100K.
The order of the draft is in reverse order based on the team’s win-loss record during the regular season.
Here are this year’s picks:
First Round:
Second round:
All but one club passed in the second round.
Thus, a total of 15 players were selected in this year’s draft–11 of them being pitchers. A total of 68 selections were made with the Triple-A portion of the Rule 5 draft ($24K)–though that R5 doesn’t have any restrictions on where players can be placed in 2025.
