2024 College Football Games of the Week: Week 5

The week 5 slate of games for the 2024 college football season is loaded. There are four ranked Vs ranked matchups this week and great conference matchups across the board. I finally had too many games to pick from, making it hard to choose only five games. Furthermore, I added some extra games to the honorable mentions. Overall, I think fans will have a great weekend of games to look forward to as this Saturday has a lot of competitive matchups.

Honorable Mention: Fresno St @ UNLV, Maryland @ Indiana, Stanford @ No. 17 Clemson, Cincinnati @ Texas Tech, No. 20 Oklahoma State @ No. 23 Kansas State, Arizona @ No. 10 Utah

5) Colorado @ UCF (3:30 p.m. ET, FOX)

This game has the potential to be a high-scoring affair with an exciting finish. UCF is 3-0 averaging 45 points per game and Colorado is 3-1 with a solid offense of their own. Colorado is fresh off the heels of a thrilling overtime win against Baylor. Moreover, UCF just came out on top of a 35-34 shootout with TCU. Hopefully, these trends continue on Saturday and fans will be in for a real treat. I’m looking forward to the quarterback battle between Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders and UCF’s KJ Jefferson. Finally, WR/CB Travis Hunter will look to continue his amazing season as he dominates on both sides of the ball.

4) Washington State @ No. 25 Boise State (10 p.m. ET, FS1)

This game is also a top game of the week in week 5 due to the offensive upside of both teams. Washington State is a surprising 4-0 three great wins over Texas Tech, Washington, and San Jose State. Also, the Cougars quarterback John Mateer has been on an absolute war path against opposing defenses. He has over 1,000 yards through the air and over 400 yards on the ground as well as a combined 16 touchdowns through four games. Boise State, who just got ranked 25 last week, will be an extremely challenging matchup.

The Broncos are off to a great start in their own right with two solid wins and an almost upset against Oregon in week 2. Their star running back Ashton Jeanty will look to take over the game on the ground and continue one of the best running back seasons in recent memory.

3) No. 19 Illinois @ No. 9 Penn State (7:30 p.m. ET, NBC)

Illinois makes the top five games of the week again as now they take on No. 9 Penn State in Beaver Stadium. The Fighting Illini pulled off an OT shocker against Nebraska last week and they can play spoiler again this week. Their defense continues to stifle opposing offenses and create turnovers. Also, the QB Luke Altmyer and WR Pat Bryant connection continues to be excellent through 4 weeks as Bryant has 6 TDs on the season.

However, Illinois might be running into a buzzsaw as Penn State has looked great this year. Although, Penn State was down at half to Bowling Green, and in their week 3 matchup Kent State could be the worst team in college football. Nevertheless, QB Drew Allar has looked Stellar this year and RB Nicholas Singleton has been efficient carrying the rock this year. This game will give Penn State an opportunity to prove they are the real deal or Illinois will be partying after another upset. I think it will be a closer game.

2) No. 15 Louisville @ No. 16 Notre Dame (3:30 p.m. ET, Peacock)

Louisville has looked strong this year and Notre Dame has been up and down this season. This is a chance for either team to boost their résumé with a big statement win on Saturday. The Cardinals’ offense has been fierce through three weeks, but they did get bailed out by two defensive touchdowns last week. Furthermore, QB Tyler Shough has been terrific airing it out this season and WR Ja’corey Brooks has been the main beneficiary this season.

However, a staunch Notre Dame defense could cause some issues for Louisville. The Fighting Irish have done everything necessary on defense but QB Riley Leonard and the offense have struggled heavily this season. Leonard has quite literally almost rushed more than he has passed for in his last two games. This is a clear-cut good offense vs good defense matchup and It will be interesting to see which side comes out on top.

Our Game of the Week: No. 2 Georgia @ No. 4 Alabama (7:30 p.m. ET, ABC/ESPN+)

This game was always going to be the number one game of the week for week 5. This is a fantastic matchup by two of the best programs in college football, which we do not get to see in the regular season as much as we should. Georgia has arguably the best defense in college football and Alabama is arguably the best offense.

There is a surplus of stars on both sides of the ball such as Georgia’s QB Carson Beck, RB Trevor Etienne, and DB Malaki Starks. Furthermore, Alabama has studs like QB Jalen Milroe, WR Ryan Williams, and LB Jihaad Campbell. Also, this is the start of a new rivalry era as this will be new Alabama head coach Karen Deboer’s first huge rivalry game. This game is can’t miss television and it could be the 2024 college football game of the year.
