Last week was not the most successful week for my 2024 CFB best bets series. I went 1-1 on over/under picks and 1-2 on picks against the spread. However, this week I will be taking more money line picks to try and play it safer. The week nine slate of college football games has a lot of solid ranked games. Furthermore, there are five ranked vs ranked matchup this week which will hopefully lead to another fun week of college football. The 2024 season has been filled with upsets so it will be interesting to see what times slip up this Saturday. Here, are my 2024 CFB best bets for week 9.
*All lines are taken from Draft Kings and are accurate as of 3:00 p.m. ET on October 25
Overall: 7-5
Honorable Mentions: 4-4
Honorable Mentions: Vanderbilt +17.5 Spread, -108, Kansas State ML, -340
This will be a tougher game to pick because Indiana QB Kurtis Rourke will miss this game due to thumb surgery. However, I will trust Indiana to get the job done at home as they host College Gameday in week 9. The Hoosiers have the highest scoring offense in college football with 48.7 points per game. They have the offensive firepower to put some pressure on Washington. Head coach Curt Cignetti has done an amazing job at Indiana in his first year and it is hard to bet against him right now.
Washington is a tough team capable of pulling off an upset on Saturday. However, the Huskies are 0-3 this season away from Husky stadium and they will be traveling across the country for this game. I expect QB Tayven Jackson to play well enough, with the help of the home crowd atmosphere, to get a win and keep this magical Indiana undefeated season going.
I’m trusting another head coach trying to turn a program around with this Nevada pick in week nine. Head coach Jeff Choate has the Wolf Pack playing good football this year as they have been competitive in every game but one. Nevada is 3-5 this year but four of their losses have been by less than five points. The Wolf Pack have had a change of identity as they play smash-mouth football with a huge focus on running the football. They rank 10th in CFB in total rush yards with 1,594 yards.
Hawaii is 2-5 and they are beatable on the ground. Their defense has struggled this year and their offense is not extremely efficient. However, this game is in Hawaii which is never ideal for the away team traveling to Honolulu. I think Nevada QB Brendon Lewis and RB Savion Red will be able to continue their success on the ground in this one. Also, Nevada has the 7th best Red Zone offense so I trust the Wolf Pack to convert when they get the chance in a game where points might be at a premium.
The final best bet in week nine is going to be Wisconsin spread against Penn State. I think this is an outright upset spot for the Badgers but I will play it safe and take the cover. Wisconsin has been playing phenomenal football these past weeks as they have outscored their opponents 117-16. QB Braedyn Locke has been moving the ball and finding the end zone in both the rushing and passing attacks. However, he will need to limit turnovers against a strong Penn State defense.
Penn State’s play has not quite reflected their No. 3 ranking in past weeks. Also, they play No. 4 Ohio State next week so this could be a look-ahead let-down spot for the Nittany Lions in week 9. Wisconsin, who is playing their best football right now, has a solid opportunity to pull off a top-five upset at home at Camp Randall. This will be head coach Luke Fickell’s first chance at a top-25 upset in his tenure at Wisconsin. This college football season has been crazy so I think Wisconsin will keep this game close and possibly even pull off the upset. These were my 2024 CFB best bets for week nine.
