We are now seven matches into the 2024-25 Premier League season and it is time for a second edition of the Vendetta Sports Media power rankings. Once again Jerry Walker and Jackson Fyda rank all 20 teams and give their thoughts on what has gone well or been dreadful for all of England’s top teams.
T-19) Wolverhampton
Average 19.5 (Jerry 20, Jackson 19)
Yikes. What has happened to Wolves? We had them ranked 12th in our Preseason Power Rankings and I guess we overshot. With one point and the worst goal difference in the Premier League, it is not surprising that Wolverhampton shares the bottom spot this time around. The issue is the defense that has allowed multiple goals in all but one match this season. Something needs to change before it’s too late for Gary O’Neil’s squad. –Jerry Walker
T-19) Southampton
Average 19.5 (Jerry 19, Jackson 20)
What goes up must always come back down. That is the best way to sum up recently promoted Southampton’s first months back in the Premier League. With only one point from the first seven matches, it is hard to be very optimistic for the Saints at the moment. Especially since they have only managed to score a whole four goals so far. –Jerry Walker
T-16) Ipswich Town
Average 17 (Jerry 18, Jackson 16)
Ipswich felt like last season’s Luton Town. And so far, they have not shown enough to give Ipswich fans confidence that they can avoid the drop unlike Luton last year. While they are not in the relegation zone right now, they are right in the thick of the early season relegation battle at the bottom of the table. They look better than our initial power rankings prediction of 20th but expect to see Ipswich continue to struggle at the bottom of the league. –Jackson Fyda
T-16) Everton
Average 17 (Jerry 16, Jackson 18)
Oh, Everton. The team that always seems to find a way to avoid the drop is looking like they’re going to be fighting a familiar battle come May. They have started to pick up results and are out of the relegation zone at the moment, but this team has shown their fragility numerous times so far this year. Don’t expect great things from the Toffies, and expect to see them fighting for survival yet again toward the end of the year. –Jackson Fyda
T- 16) Crystal Palace
Average 17 (Jerry 17, Jackson 17)
Crystal Palace has had a rough start to the 2024-25 Premier League season. They currently find themselves toward the bottom of the table with 0 wins from their opening seven games and have only scored five goals while conceding 10. There is still plenty of time to turn things around, but for a side that finished in 10th place at the end of last season, this has not been good enough. –Jackson Fyda
15) Leicester City
Average 15 (Jerry 15, Jackson 15)
Leicester have by no means looked great, but compared to their fellow bottom dwellers they are the cream of the crop. This is not saying much since they do have just a single win which came in their last match against Bournemouth. The big thing is that they do not look worried about going against bigger teams. They lost 4-2 at Arsenal but that came with two stoppage-time goals for the hosts. Eventually, some results will fall their way and that will be the difference. –Jerry Walker
14) Bournemouth
Average 13.5 (Jerry 14, Jackson 13)
It has been par for the course for Bournemouth so far. After finishing in 12th place last season, the Cherries currently find themselves in 13th place with eight points from seven games. Although results like the 1-0 loss to Leicester City have been disappointing, there is really not a whole lot that manager Andoni Iraola can be unhappy with. Don’t expect Bournemouth to be in the relegation battle at the end of the year and expect them to continue to hover between 10th and 15th place. –Jackson Fyda
13) Manchester United
Average 12.5 (Jerry 13, Jackson 12)
Not many teams have been as disappointing as Manchester United this Premier League season. With just eight points through seven matches, they sit in 14th place in the table. Erik ten Hag is on the hot seat, they have failed to score in three of their last four league matches, and have not impressed on the European stage. All in all, this has been a start to forget for Man U and someone needs to step up as no player has multiple goals in the Premier League this season. –Jerry Walker
12) West Ham
Average 12 (Jerry 10, Jackson 14)
West Ham may have the same amount of points as Man United, but at least they have managed to score 10 goals. Also, their three losses have come against teams currently sitting in the top five of the Premier League table. Jarrod Bowen has been a bit off the pace thus far with just two goals after he bagged 16 last season. –Jerry Walker
11) Brentford
Average 11.5 (Jerry 12, Jackson 11)
The biggest question entering the season was how Brentford was going to cope with the loss of star striker Ivan Toney. So far so good for the Bees. They currently sit in 13th place and have had no trouble finding the back of the net, scoring 14 goals in eight matches. Defensively, there is still a lot to be desired, by the performances of Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa should give Brentford fans piece of mind in avoiding a relegation scare like our initial power rankings predicted. –Jackson Fyda
10) Nottingham Forest
Average 10.5 (Jerry 11, Jackson 10)
One of the biggest surprises so far in the 2024-25 Premier League season has to be Nottingham Forest. Last season they just managed to avoid relegation and now through seven matches they sit in the top half of the table. To make things even better, Forest has performed against top teams. A goal by Callum Hudson-Odoi saw them pick up a 1-0 road win against Liverpool. Then they drew 2-2 at Brighton and 1-1 at Chelsea. In the road tables Forest sit third behind Liverpool and Chelsea. –Jerry Walker
9) Fulham
Average 9 (Jerry 9, Jackson 9)
Fulham has been quietly impressive so far. A 3-1 victory over Newcastle and an impressive 3-2 loss at Manchester City have shown Fulham’s potential to be a quality side. While they haven’t been as consistent as manager Marco Silva would like, the Cottagers have played well enough to make bigger sides weary about playing them. Continue to expect a mid-table performance from Fulham. –Jackson Fyda
8) Tottenham
Average 8 (Jerry 8, Jackson 8)
Tottenham is the definition of chaos this year. Sometimes they look incredible like when they went to Old Trafford and battered Man United 3-0. Other times they look lost such as when they lost 3-2 against Brighton after leading 2-0 at halftime. Ange Postecoglou has some work to do if Spurs are going to move up the table, but with Son Heung-min returning after a three-match absence things are looking brighter. –Jerry Walker
7) Brighton
Average 7 (Jerry 7, Jackson 7)
Fabian Hürzeler, take a bow. Brighton have started the season absolutely flying. After our initial power rankings predicted Brighton to finish in 11th place, wins against Manchester United and Tottenham and a draw away to Arsenal have shot the Seagulls into the top-four conversation early into the year. Danny Welbeck’s goalscoring renaissance has been a marvel to watch, and if Hürzeler’s side can keep doing what they have been doing, expect to see Brighton pushing for the top four come May. –Jackson Fyda
T-5) Newcastle
Average 5.5 (Jerry 5, Jackson 6)
Similarly to Tottenham, Newcastle are a confusing team. They go from losing 3-1 to Fulham to drawing 1-1 with Manchester City. After a disappointing season a year ago, they have had a rather strong start to the 2024-25 Premier League season. Just a single loss after seven matches has them sitting right in the mix of European qualification. –Jerry Walker
T-5) Aston Villa
Average 5.5 (Jerry 6, Jackson 5)
Aston Villa had a remarkably impressive 2023-24 Premier League campaign and the Claret and Blue have continued that form into the beginning of this season. Currently sitting in 4th place, Villa has so far managed to be impressive in both the league and the Champions League, highlighted by their 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich. While it has not been perfect, Villa looks incredibly strong right now and Unai Emery’s side should continue to push for the top four. –Jackson Fyda
4) Chelsea
Average 4 (Jerry 4, Jackson 4)
After a questionable decision to sack Mauricio Pochettino and replace him with Enzo Maresca, it was uncertain how this Chelsea team would look. Although they have yet to earn a result against a top team so far, the Blues look dangerous. Nicolas Jackson has finally found his goalscoring form, and Cole Palmer is doing Cole Palmer things. Chelsea has looked incredibly solid to start the year, and the return to competing for Champions League spots could happen much sooner than we expected. –Jackson Fyda
3) Liverpool
Average 2.5 (Jerry 2, Jackson 3)
Having league-leading Liverpool third in these power rankings seems criminal, but that’s just how it worked out. There are very few flaws for the team with the best defense and best away record. Liverpool have allowed just two goals this season, but one of those did come in a shocking loss to Southampton, the only blemish on their record thus far. Mohamed Salah and Luis Díaz have been looking superb up top with nine goals and five assists between them. A concern for Liverpool is that Alisson is going to be out until after the November international break and during that time they play four of the top six sides. –Jerry Walker
2) Arsenal
Average 2 (Jerry 3, Jackson 1)
Arsenal has looked very impressive so far this season. So far, the Gunners have five wins and two draws. These two draws were against Manchester City (2nd place) and Brighton (6th place) when Arsenal finished the game with 10 men. This is the strongest Arsenal has looked under Mikel Arteta, and although there is still a lot of season left to be played, this looks like the best chance the Gunners have to dethrone Manchester City and ascend to the top of the Premier League once more. –Jackson Fyda
1) Manchester City
Average 1.5 (Jerry 1, Jackson 2)
The only flaw that I have seen from Manchester City is that they do seem to be conceding rather early in every match. Despite that, Erling Haaland has already secured the 2024-25 Premier League Golden Boot with 10 goals in seven matches. A concern is that Rodri is out for the rest of the season which is a big blow. However, Mateo Kovacic has picked up the slack with a pair of goals last time out. –Jerry Walker
