2023 NFL Draft War Room: Detroit Lions

What an opportunity the Detroit Lions have! The young core is starting to develop and the NFC is way down. I’m not sure this is the draft I want two first round picks in but either way, the future appears bright. The 2023 is an exciting one but what should Detroit actually do? Let’s head inside the Lions War Room to see what they might have cooking!

  • Round 1, Pick 6 overall (from LAR)
  • Round 1, Pick 18 overall
  • Round 2, Pick 48 overall
  • Round 2, Pick 55 overall (from MIN)
  • Round 3, Pick 81 overall
  • Round 5, Pick 152 overall
  • Round 6, Pick 183 overall (from DEN)
  • Round 6, Pick 194 overall

The Lions are getting close. Still holes on the roster but we’re getting there. I think it’s important for the Lions to build for now but also to not forget about the future. Don’t be shy about moving some of these picks to next year. Jared Goof (incorrect spelling intended) is still the quarterback and you’re not winning anything important with him still under center. Let’s keep adding pieces to the roster while giving us a chance to land that quarterback prospect next year.

If Jalen Carter is available, I don’t think Detroit can pass. Levi Onwuzurike might not ever play again. I still don’t know why they picked him but that’s another story. Liam McNeill hasn’t turned into anything special either. The Lions are missing that truly dominant interior presence. How does Detroit not take him if the opportunity presents itself?

I don’t think the Lions should shy away from cornerback either. If one of those top guys is on the board, go grab them. Especially after the trade of Jeff Okudah. Cam Sutton and Emmanuel Mosely are nice additions but having a younger long term option on the roster makes a lot of sense.

The Lions have put effort into rebuilding this offensive line. They shouldn’t stop there. There is a hole at right guard and there are names in this draft to fill the spot. Give Penei Sewell his running mate fo the next ten years. Also, Sewell’s brother is in this draft and the Lions could use another linebacker. Alex Anzalone is a nice player but also rarely healthy. Just a thought…
