As a three-sport athlete in High School, 2023 MLB Draft prospect Wyatt Langford eventually chose baseball at Florida and flourished. He barely played as a freshman, but broke out as a sophomore, earning All-American honors with 26 home runs and a .356/.447/.719 slash line. His play earned him a spot on Team USA where he continued to shine and show his abilities as a true hitter.
He has a quick, compact swing and is great at getting his hands to the ball. All this combines to help create some sneaky pop at 6-foot-1. I’m not too sure how his power will transfer to the next levels, but his raw hitting ability shouldn’t be affected too much.
His approach at the plate was also a big part of his success. It allowed him to work a lot of walks while limiting strikeouts. His defense in left field is nothing to get too excited about, it’s not bad but also not one of his elite traits.
His speed still grades out above average at 55/80 and should help his range out in left field. At one point, there were talks of moving him to center field. But honestly, I think LF is better suited for his style.
I wouldn’t quite say Wyatt Langford has five-tool potential, I just don’t think the defense is there for that to be possible, but he still has the potential to be an elite hitter with some sneaky pop.
His quick swing makes me believe he will find success in some fashion at the next level. It’s pretty to watch and makes it easy to understand why he is such a good hitter. He may not have all the other tools but he may be the best pure hitter this class has to offer.
