As we continue our profiles of future MLB prospects, we make our way to our first high school prospect, Walker Jenkins. There was a time when drafting a prospect out of high school was considered absurd, but in recent years we’ve seen these kids succeed and fast-track their way to the big leagues. Does Jenkins have that kind of potential? Let’s find out.
At only 18 years old, Jenkins boasts a rather impressive hit tool. He has an extremely smooth and quick swing from the left side of the plate which helps him generate a lot of power. He grades as a plus at 60/80 with the ability to generate some real big-league power.
He boasted an absurd .527/.628/1.032 slash line over the course of this last season at South Brunswick in North Carolina. Granted it’s against high school-level pitching, but he has still shown a pure ability to hit the ball. He also has shown the ability to work walks and limit strikeouts, which is always an essential tool to being a good hitter.
Again, all of this is against other high schoolers, but you can’t really blame Jenkins for that. What he can control is his play on the field and that has spoken for itself.
Check this video out to see why I love his swing so much.
His fielding, while not elite, still grades as above average at 55/80 with a plus arm at 60/80. He will likely play center field as he seemingly has the speed and range to hold the position down. But even if he can’t play center, he can be a plus-fielding corner outfielder with a solid bat.
At 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, Jenkins has a great build at only 18 years old. He will have plenty of time to put on some muscle and grow more into his frame, which will really allow him to tap into that raw power we’ve seen from him so far.
Again, this kid is only 18 years old, and it’s going to be like three years at best before we see this kid in the MLB. Inevitably a lot is up in the air for how Jenkins’ career will pan out. Still, what I can say is I like the hit tool Jenkins boasts and love his smooth swing even more.
Overall, Jenkins has a lot of tools that I like and the potential of this kid at only 18 years old is nuts. A team will surely take a swing at him early in the draft and I can’t really say I blame them. I think we all will become more familiar with the name Walker Jenkins in the near future.
