Well, we’ve already covered a few High School projects in this 2023 MLB Draft series. It’s just something that is starting to become more normal. Now, we’ve made it to our first High School Pitching project Noble Meyer, who attended the same High School as Phillies prospect Mick Abel.
Jesuit High School knows what it’s doing in terms of developing pitching. Something that has greatly benefited Noble Meyer, who likely will go high in the first round, also like Abel did. But does he have the stiff to make it to the big leagues?
Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 55
The first thing that jumped out to me about Noble Meyer was his huge frame. At just 18-years-old, Meyer stands at 6-foot-5, 185 pounds. The weight leaves a little to be desired but he has more than enough time to bulk into his frame a little bit.
He uses that huge frame to help him pump his dominant fastball past hitters, allowing him to have an almost effortless motion allowing him to get into a rhythm early in games.
You’ll notice his three-quarters arm slot and how whippy it allows his arm to get, which allows him to generate more speed and movement on his offspeed.
While the fastball is his best pitch, currently sitting at 97-98 mph, his offspeed isn’t too far behind. His slider sitting in the mid 80s serves as a great compliment to his fastball. With sharp bite and great lateral movement, it has the potential for being a great strikeout pitch for him in the future.
His changeup is nothing to scoff at either. It displays great fade and significant downward movement, something his two other pitches fail to do: Making it great for catching hitters off guard and generating weak contact.
In all, Noble Meyer is extremely polished for an 18-year-old. He has three plus pitches he can control with a great command of the strike zone. If I was in a position to make a pick Meyer, he would be high on my list.
He seems so far ahead of the project label most kids his age with all the tools to be a frontline or ace-level starter at the MLB level. Maybe adding another pitch could benefit him by giving more variety on the mound.
But aside from that, I don’t see too many weaknesses in the game of Noble Meyer. Whoever ends up with this kid is getting an absolute stud. You may have to wait a bit but I believe in a few years, but Meyer will be a name all of us are familiar with.
