We are officially knee-deep into the 2022 NFL Season after the annual three-game Thanksgiving Thursday, in which we saw the Buffalo Bills squeak out a narrow victory over the Detroit Lions, the Dallas Cowboys handling their NFC East rival, the New York Giants, and the Minnesota Vikings winning a shootout against Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots. Let’s dive into a few Week 12 breakout candidates, but first, how’d we do in Week 11?
Yikes! Worst week in a while! Let’s have a better one!
Now, time into dive into the Week 12 breakout candidates!
Rachaad White, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Leonard Fournette is out this week with a hip injury, so Rachaad White should receive most of the touches out of the backfield. The Cleveland Browns’ run defense has been horrendous this season, surrendering 4.8 yards per carry (28th in NFL) and are dead last in rush defense DVOA. Tampa hasn’t been very effective on the ground this season, but it began to find its legs against Seattle in Munich, when it ran for a season-most 161 yards. That rushing attack was led by….you guessed it: Rachaad White! Expect him to be a focal point again this week.
Elijah Moore, WR, New York Jets
I’m sure every Jets fan and a member within that organization wants last week out of its season. Mike White is starting behind center this week, and while that might not be the most appealing option, it might be better than the current state of Zach Wilson. Nevertheless, in the three games when Wilson wasn’t behind center, Moore had 12 receptions for 139 yards. In the six games since? Six catches for 81 yards. That’s roughly half the production in double the sample. I don’t expect the Jets to air it out a ton this week against the Chicago Bears, but when they do, I foresee them trying to spoon feed Moore. He’s a prime breakout candidate this week.
Latavius Murray, RB, Denver Broncos
Murray’s found the endzone in four of his six games with Denver, so this might not be a true breakout candidate. But he will now indisputably be their No. 1 tailback after it waived Melvin Gordon. Murray’s only averaged 3.3 yards per attempt, but perhaps he breaks out against the Carolina Panthers — who are near the bottom-third in rush defense DVOA (21st) — on Sunday? Only time will tell.
Tyler Boyd, WR, Cincinnati Bengals
Bengals running back Joe Mixon is out (concussion) and the Tennessee Titans have arguably the best run defense in the league, so I’m expecting the Bengals to air it out a healthy amount, even with Ja’Marr Chase still injured. Boyd has just seven catches over his last two games and four or fewer catches in seven of his 10 games this season. I foresee a four-to-five catch day for the 28-year-old wideout Sunday. He’s due for a big day.
