Don’t Eat The Cheese! 2024 Fantasy Baseball: 1st Baseman
Slowly and surely Vendetta Sports Media will establish itself as the premier go to site for fantasy sports. You can laugh at that statement all you want but the evidence doesn’t lie. I own fantasy hockey (RIP Sean Allen). Matthew Berry was embarrassed. In 2024 we’re throwing our hat in the fantasy baseball realm and the Don’t Eat The Cheese series will return to cover MLB.
For now, I don’t have anything against ESPN’s fantasy baseball department. Time will tell if that changes. In the meantime, I’m just going to give you busts. Any player that’s ranked too high inside the top 50, we’re going to expose them together.
*Link to ESPN rankings. They constantly change so don’t shoot the messenger if they’re updated after publication.
Paul Goldschmidt (St. Louis Cardinals) -1B7, 58th overall
I have to stretch the rules a bit again for this one. The top-end 1st basemen are usually pretty stable from year to year once they’re established. If you’re going to look for one guy to fade, it’s probably a 36-year-old Goldschmidt who plays for a bad Cardinals team. Excluding the COVID season that barely counts, Goldy had his lowest HR total since 2016 last year in 2023. It was his lowest batting average season since his rookie year in 2011. The age is starting to show itself. Not saying Goldy is a bad play but if I miss out on the top guys I’d rather not settle and swing for the upside play later.
Honorable Mention (Christian Walker)
Walker got MVP votes for the first time in his career last year at the age of 32. Underrated player but there is no shot he’s a top 75 player in fantasy. No way. Now we’re starting to get carried away and this is when you get burnt.
