WWE Night of Champions 2023 Early Match Card Predictions

WWE Night of Champions is only a few weeks away, marking the first time WWE will hold the event since 2015. The company recently announced it will be bringing back the premium live event in place of the King and Queen of the Ring event.

WWE Night of Champions is a special event because every title in WWE will be on the line, hence the name. Furthermore, this is the first premium live event following the WWE Draft, so there will be new feuds starting for most of the titles, which brings a lot of new opportunities into play. I also wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a UFC fighter appear at the event. WWE was recently sold to the parent company of the UFC, Endeavor.

It’s worth noting that the WWE Tag Team Championships won’t be defended on the show. Sami Zayn is a Syrian Muslim and the event is in Saudi Arabia, which is why Zayn has never competed in shows held in Saudi Arabia. The political divide between Saudi Arabia and Syria means Zayn is banned from wrestling in the former country.

That being said, let’s go over some early match card predictions for WWE Night of Champions.

Cody Rhodes vs. Brock Lesnar (Confirmed)

After picking up a win over Brock Lesnar at WWE BackLash, Cody Rhodes was looking to move on; however, Lesnar had different plans.

Rhodes was competing in one of the triple threat matches on Monday Night Raw in which the winner would have an opportunity to become the new World Heavyweight Champion. Lesnar attacked Rhodes during the match, which cost him the win. Furthermore, Lesnar brutally put him through a table and challenged him not to a match, but to a fight.

Later in the night, Rhodes accepted the challenge. As it stands right now, it’s just a singles match. However, I think there’s a good chance a stipulation gets added to it. I’m predicting it’s going to be a steel cage match at Night of Champions.

Seth Rollins vs. ??? (Confirmed) (World Heavyweight Championship Match)

WWE will be crowning their new World Heavyweight Champion at Night of Champions. They held a tournament on Monday Night Raw in which Seth Rollins was the victor. They will be holding the same tournament on Friday Night SmackDown to determine who will face Rollins.

Rollins will be facing either AJ Styles, Edge, Rey Mysterio, Austin Theory, Bobby Lashley or Sheamus. My prediction is going to be Edge.

Edge and Rollins have a rich history already and it would do a lot for the title to have a legend like Edge wanting to win it. Plus, now that all of the stuff with Judgment Day is over, he needs a new storyline.

Ronda Rousey & Shayna Baszler vs. Liv Morgan (c) & Raquel Rodriquez (c) (Women’s Tag Team Championship Match)

WWE has never booked the Women’s Tag Team Championships properly. It’s something that is fairly easy to do, but they just can never seem to do it right.

Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler would be the perfect choice to have them become new Tag Team Champions and really bring some prestige to the titles. Furthermore, it really does feel like WWE is waiting for them to get healthy since we’ve been getting these one-off matches for the titles.

Although Chelsea Green and Sonya Deville are next in line for the titles, that match just doesn’t seem like a premium live event match.

Cameron Grimes vs. Austin Theory (c) (United States Championship Match)

Austin Theory has been dominant since becoming the United States Champion. He’s beaten the likes of John Cena, Rey Mysterio, plus more. Cameron Grimes is finally making his main-roster debut after getting drafted to SmackDown. Theory is looking for a new challenger for his title after successfully defending it against Bobby Lashley and Bronson Reed at BackLash.

There are a lot of good options to choose from currently on SmackDown. However, Grimes is someone who stands out to me because WWE is very high on him. As much as I am reluctant to think they will put an NXT call-up in a title picture immediately, I think Grimes is an exception. However, if Edge doesn’t compete for the World Heavyweight Championship, I think it’ll be him instead of Grimes.

Drew McIntyre vs. Gunther (c) (Intercontinental Championship Match)

Gunther is one of the most dominant forces in WWE. He’s having a record-breaking Intercontinental Championship run and will likely go on to become the longest-reigning champion in history. After switching brands during the draft, he is looking for a new challenger. I think that person is Drew McIntyre.

McIntyre and Gunther have never faced each other in singles competition in WWE. Even though they both were part of a triple-threat match at WrestleMania 39, McIntyre is likely going to get another opportunity. With the Brawling Brutes on SmackDown, McIntyre has a clear line for the Intercontinental Championship.

Natalya vs. Rhea Ripley (c) (Raw Women’s Championship Match)

Rhea Ripley is technically the SmackDown Women’s Champion. However, after getting drafted to Raw, she is sort of the Raw Women’s Champion now. Even though WWE has yet to acknowledge the women’s title situation, I could see her and Bianca simply just swapping titles.

That being said, it looks like we’re going to get Natalya as a challenger for the title. I like this because it will give Ripley a win over a decorated veteran in the business. Plus they are waiting for a big money feud for SummerSlam, so this is a good holdover until they start to build toward that.

IYO SKY vs. Bianca Belair (c) (SmackDown Women’s Championship Match)

Bianca Belair and IYO SKY are coming off of one of the best matches of the year at BackLash. However, Bayley and Dakota Kai cost IYO the title. While we haven’t heard anything from either side yet, it feels like we are going to get the rematch at Night of Champions.

It feels like the idea is for a triple-threat match between IYO SKY, Bayley and Dakota Kai at SummerSlam, so I don’t necessarily think this feud between IYO and Belair is done quite yet.

Roman Reigns’ 1,000-Day Celebration

Roman Reigns is having a once-in-a-lifetime run as Undisputed Universal Champion. He’s beaten just about everyone he could have over his monumental title reign. It really can’t be stressed enough just how impressive it is. What’s even crazier is that Reigns will officially hit 1,000 days as Universal Champion on May 27, which is the date of Night of Champions.

WWE has had a serious problem ever since the WWE and Universal Championship were unified. So, I think they are going to present Roman with a new title at Night of Champions in honor of him hitting 1,000 days as champion.
