Wild Sign Matt Boldy To Massive Extension
I assume the Minnesota Wild read my post on Matt Boldy and decided to stop screwing around. I used the words “rival teams” and “offer sheet” and it likely sent the Wild into full blown panic move. They knew what I did. Boldy is a player Minnesota couldn’t afford to lose. Credit to this Wild front office for recognizing it and making sure they kept their homegrown star, or shall I say soon-to-be star.
Frank Seravalli at the Daily Faceoff was the first to report the news:
Boldy, 21, was in the final season of his entry level contract. The new $7 million AAV makes Boldy the third highest paid player on the Wild behind Kirill Kaprizov ($9 million) and Jared Spurgeon ($7.575 million). Don’t forget, the Wild are in cap hell too waiting for the buyouts to expire on the awful Zach Parise and Ryan Suter deals.
The Massachusetts native through 42 games this season, Boldy has 12 goals and 17 assists for 29 points. Good enough for 4th on the Wild right now. Of course, Boldy hasn’t really scratched the surface for what he will become yet. It’s safe to say the Wild made a great selection when the drafted Boldy out of Boston College with the 12th pick in the 2019 NHL Draft.
This is a huge win for the Wild. The $7 million AAV isn’t exactly a small number but it’s a cap hit that could look like a bargain in a few years. Take care of your players early, never late. Do the Devils regret paying Jack Hughes early? NOPE!
