Victor Wembanyama offers positive update after blood clot diagnosis

San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama suffered a life-threatening blood clot scare in his right shoulder in late February, prematurely ending his season.

For the first time since the prognosis, he spoke to the media and provided an update about his recovery. It appears he’s in good spirits, saying he hasn’t been cleared for any contact activity–though he was cleared for “light weightlifting and on-court work,” according to ESPN’s Michael Wright.

“There’s many more things than surgery when you go to the hospital for a blood clot,” Wembanyama said, according to Wright. “We’re taking our time and I’m neither late or early (in recovery), but it’s a process and there are definitely steps for me to reach. At the time, I definitely didn’t know (the extent of the condition). But looking back I did feel a certain way. I wasn’t in the best shape ever at the All-Star Game. By no means was it easy to learn and process. I think I did and I’m still doing the best we can do, taking care of my body and trusting the incredible work of the medical staff. I’m sure it’s something I’m going to use to grow and be better.”

Wembanyama, 21, averaged 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.8 blocks per game across 40 games. He shot 47.6 percent, including 35.2 percent from 3-point range and 83.6 percent from the free-throw line.

When you’re discussing blood clots of any sort, it’s a very scary situation. They ended Chris Bosh‘s career prematurely and one could imagine how terrified Wembanyama was at the time–even though they were found in his shoulder and not his lungs, heart or brain.

He’s very lucky that the Spurs’ medical staff found it and treated it as soon as they did. The expectation is that he’s going to make a full recovery ahead of next season–as he should. He was only getting better and was well on his way to win Defensive Player of the Year if he qualified, which he doesn’t.

San Antonio missed the postseason for the sixth consecutive season. Multiple late-season injuries derailed their chances, so I’m interested to see if the Spurs try to make any splashes–outside of the one they already made for De’Aaron Fox–this summer.
