Urban Meyer is set to make his NFL coaching debut for the Jacksonville Jaguars this upcoming season. Meyer coached at Utah, Florida, and Ohio State, where he had a ton of success at each school and won a national championship with Florida and Ohio State. When Meyer left Ohio State two years ago, it seemed like he was ready to finally step away from coaching, so him taking the Jacksonville job was surprising. Meyer can have all the college coaching success he wants, but coaching in the NFL is a completely different animal.
Of the seven new coaching hires, I liked the Urban Meyer hiring the most until he actually started to make moves. No one gets credit for drafting Trevor Lawrence; the kid had been slated to go No. 1 overall since his freshman year at Clemson. Then they drafted Travis Etienne with the 25th overall pick. I did not hate the pick because other than Derrick Henry, the workhorse running back does not really work in the NFL. And I like the backfield duo between James Robinson and Etienne.
After the draft, however, reports surfaced that Urban Meyer was high on Florida wide receiver Kadarius Toney, so why did they draft a running back instead of targeting another receiver. And as rookie training camp started, Meyer told the media that Etienne would be taking all of his reps at wide receiver. I just do not get drafting a running back in the first round only for him to take reps at receiver.
And now we come to the most mind-boggling decision that Urban Meyer has made as the coach of the Jaguars, signing Tim Tebow as a tight end. I seriously think that Tebow has some dirt on Meyer from their days back in Gainesville. With Aaron Hernandez, the Pouncey brothers, and Riley Cooper on the team, there has to be some shit that got swept under the rug, and now Tebow is playing his hand. If that is true, props to you, Tim Tebow. I also read that if Tebow plays another season in the NFL, he gets a much larger petition. I don’t think this was the driving force behind the signing, but why not go full conspiracy theory. From a pure football view, this move makes no sense. First, you are taking up a roster spot that a guy that has worked his whole life to be a professional football player. Second, Tebow has been out of the league for eight years, and now he is supposed to come in at a new position and block guys like Khalil Mack and Chase Young. I don’t see it.
Do I think Tebow will make the team? Probably not. But I don’t like the message it sends to your locker room. This guy is only on the team because he has a past relationship with the head coach. This is the NFL, Urban. Your one and only job is to win football games, not to give out favors to long time friends. Finally, Urban Meyer every year as a coach at either Ohio State and Florida was getting the top players in the country and winning 10 or 11 games a season. What happens when Jacksonville goes on a five game losing streak and Urban realizes he just does not have the star power to compete in the NFL?
