Tua Tagovailoa placed on injury reserve, Dolphins sign Tyler Huntley

First, man, you have got to feel bad for Tua Tagovailoa. I can’t remember a player who suffered so many concussions in such a short amount of time. The concussion he sustained last Thursday against the Buffalo Bills will be his fourth since the start of 2022. With this concussion, the Miami Dolphins have officially placed Tagovailoa on injury reserve.

With this open roster spot, the Dolphins signed free agent quarterback Tyler Huntley off of the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad. Huntley has spent the entirety of his career in Baltimore, dating back to the 2020 season.

He has started nine games over that period and has a career 3-6 record. Huntley has 1,957 career passing yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. He is known to be a mobile quarterback, with 509 career rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.

Who Will Start?

In place of Tagovailoa, third-year quarterback Skylar Thompson will be Miami’s new starter. Thompson was selected with the 247th overall pick in the 7th round of the 2022 NFL draft. He was not on the official roster last season but was brought back this year.

After Tagovailoa went down last Thursday, Thompson stepped in. He went 8-for-14 on passes, with a 57.1 completion percentage. He threw for no touchdowns or interceptions.

The earliest Tagovailoa could come back would be Week 8 against the Indianapolis Colts, as when a player is placed on IR, they are required to miss at least four weeks.

Brain injuries like this build up over time, and players with multiple concussions like this have a higher chance of developing diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. This is why the Dolphins are not taking any chances with their $53.1 million dollar-a-year man.
