Tottenham Close to Deal with Antonio Conte as New Manager

Tottenham are close to a deal appointing Antonio Conte as the club’s new manager, per reports from football insider Fabrizio Romano. Tottenham fired manager Nuno Espirito Santo earlier Monday morning.

According to sources close to ESPN, Conte has been offered an initial 18-month contract with an option to extend another year. Club chairman Daniel Levy sacked Espirito Santo after 17 games at the helm, with Tottenham currently sitting eighth in the Premier League, despite a three-game win streak to open the season.

Conte was in negotiations with the north London side this summer to fill its managerial vacancy. Sources close to ESPN allege those talks fell through because the club was unwilling to give the Italian “wide-ranging control of first-team affairs.” Conversations with other managers including the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Brendan Rodgers and Erik ten Hag, among others, fell apart this summer before Espirito Santo was hired from Wolverhampton.

Conte publicly denied that questions surrounding his salary were the reason behind the deal falling apart.

“I look for the projects instead and I am ready to stay at home if something is not convincing me. It has to do with vision, honesty and principles.”

The Lecce, Italy native most recently managed reigning Serie A champion Inter Milan and notably led Tottenham’s west London rival Chelsea FC before that. In his two years at the club, he drove the Blues to the 2016-17 Premier League crown and a FA Cup victory in 2018.

Since his head managerial debut in 2006, Conte has never spent more than three years at a club, but Spurs are hoping he can get the side competing for the “Top 4” and Champions League football once again.
