Tony Romo Signs Massive Extension With CBS

Lost in all the madness going on with the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine today, Tony Romo got paid! ESPN tried to swipe Romo away from CBS. They were not about to let that happen. Romo signed an extension with CBS worth $17 million per year. Not a bad deal to call the games instead of play in them.

Andrew Marchand of The New York Post had the following:

“Tony Romo has agreed to the largest sports analyst contract in TV history, a deal to remain at CBS which will prevent him from reaching the free-agent market, where ESPN was poised to aggressively bid for him, The Post has learned.

The contract will pay Romo around $17 million per season, which is more than double the previous NFL high of $8 million per year John Madden received more than two decades ago. Even when adjusted for inflation — which would make Madden’s number $14 million — Romo still is the highest paid ever.

The long-term deal sources say, is for significantly more than five years, which means the total value for Romo’s contract will surpass $100 million.”

It sounds like a crazy number, but Romo is worth it. Nobody is better at calling games then Romo. His intelligence and ability to diagnose what’s coming puts him head and shoulders above everybody else. It’s no surprise why ESPN wanted him. Could you blame them? Romo would be a huge upgrade over Jason Witten and Booger McFarland. We will just have Romo on Sunday’s instead of Monday’s and I’m cool with that.

What’s crazier is that Romo’s average salary per year when he was actually playing was $9.1 million. Being undrafted, of course, brings that number way down. Romo is the best in the business and CBS made the right call keeping him. He’s the only NFL broadcaster that puts asses in seats.
