Taylor Lewan, Tennessee’s three-time Pro Bowl left tackle and co-host of Bussin’ With The Boys, is officially no longer a Titan.
Lewan suffered an ACL tear against Buffalo in Week 2 of this past season — the same ACL that he tore in 2020. The nine-year veteran was set to earn $14.8 million in the final year of his contract. These two factors made it fairly obvious that the Titans would be releasing Lewan at some point this offseason. The former 11th overall pick out of Michigan will need to get his knee fully fixed before he can contemplate returning to an NFL field.
The Titans’ releasing of Lewan was a move the whole NFL world saw coming. Lewan even directly addressed this possibility way back in December.
On his podcast, Bussin’ With The Boys, with former teammate Will Compton, Lewan stated, “It would be wildly egotistical for me to sit here and say oh the Titans need me here next year.”
Lewan seems realistic about the fact that his time as one of the league’s dominant left tackles is over. Yet his position is one of the most sought after in the NFL. If his knee problems can be solved, another team would definitely take a chance on Lewan.
Led by head coach Mike Vrabel and stud running back Derrick Henry, the Titans have been a formidable team the last few seasons. Their run heavy offense succeeded largely because of an excellent offensive line led by Lewan. The Titans decision to release Lewan may be the first domino to fall in a full rebuild of Tennessee’s team.
After a Week 18 loss in Jacksonville, the Titans missed the playoffs for the first time since 2018. After already firing their general manager, offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, and secondary coach, much change is on the way in Tennessee.
The Titans also have to deal with a $36.6 million cap hit from underwhelming quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Vrabel is not on the apparent coaching hot seat as of yet. A looming team and coaching rebuild will likely make an already intense Vrabel even more so in 2023.
