The New England Patriots are off to a historic start on the defensive side of the ball. To date, it’s been the best defense ever. New England basically ranks first in everything. They have 6 defensive or special teams touchdowns. New England has forced 25 turnovers and are giving up just 7.6 points per game. That’s absurd. How about this stat. If the offense never took the field this year and never scored a point, the Patriots would be 4-2-2. How nuts is that? It’s Bill Belichick’s greatest defense ever… Except it’s not his defense. It’s Steve Belichick’s defense.
The Boston Herald first had the story:
“Patriots secondary coach Steve Belichick has been calling defensive plays for weeks, multiple players confirmed to the Herald. Bill Belichick remains ever observant on the sideline, jotting notes and getting a feel for the game. Whenever he deems necessary, the headman will turn from the field and address his defense with an adjustment.”
Who knew the secret sauce was Steve this whole time? Steve Belichick, 32, was supposed to be sharing the duties with Jerod Mayo. It’s been reported that Mayo gave the keys to Steve. From everything you read in the story, it sounds like Steve is another Belichick genius. Credit to Bill here. He’s not just smart. He’s got good swimmers too.
Here’s what I want to know. When Bill calls it quits, does Steve get the head job? Does Josh McDaniels get the head job? Will Bill just never die and coach forever? Will Tom Brady still be the quarterback in 25 years? These are important questions that I want answers too. The Patriots are just incredible. The name on the back of the jersey never matters. They just win all the time. Hell, the Patriots have 4 guys on the roster that went to Rutgers. That might be the biggest accomplishment of all.
