Last week Walt Williams, a writing mind behind Star Wars Battlefront II (2017), announced his new role as narrative director for Insomniac Games. He joins an all-star production cast to work on Wolverine, an upcoming Marvel PS5 exclusive.
Because excitement is high for any Marvel title that’s developed by Insomniac Games, all Wolverine news is good news. As of yet the American video game developer has been in a golden-age of hit releases. Their console games are critically and commercially acclaimed darlings, Insomniac’s Spider-Man titles feeling both familiar and fresh in execution. And though it’s been said a million times over, the truth is that Insomniac really does make you feel like you’re Spider-man.
Really makes you feel like you’re Spider-Man.
Everyone Ever
But more impressive than Insomniac’s gameplay is its storytelling abilities. For a market as saturated as it is with superhero movies, television shows, and video games, Insomniac has a talent for making old tropes fresh once again. Between Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020), the story is consistently strong. So it’s exciting to find out the writer behind Star Wars Battlefront II and Spec Ops: The Line (2012) Walt Williams is taking the reins as narrative director. And apparently, the feeling is mutual.
Walt William Writes for Marvel
Back in 2021 Brian Horton, the creative lead of Wolverine, promised us a darker, more mature game than Insomniac’s previous titles. He stressed the development team’s values of staying true to their source material’s DNA. And what’s more on-brand for Wolverine than dirty violence and mature themes?
It’s in this respect that Walt Williams seems a good fit for the upcoming PS5 exclusive. Though Star Wars Battlefront II is more cutesy of a title than you’d hope for the lead behind Wolverine, Williams has a solid track record of mature storytelling. Walt Williams served as story editor on titles like Mafia II (2010) and Bioshock 2 (2010). He wrote Significant Zero, a novel all about narrative design. And Walt Williams drove the story for Spec Ops: The Line, a dark third-person shooter praised for its provocative, thrilling narrative. He has the experience to craft a heavyweight of a story just right for the iconic Weapon X.
William’s involvement is the latest piece of news concerning the Insomniac’s Wolverine. Little is known about the highly-anticipated title first announced in September 2021 at the PlayStation Showcase. Even the release date is a mystery. So in the meantime Walt William’s tweet is a nice breath of fresh air.
