Should The Washington Football Team Go After Another Quarterback?

The Washington Football Team had a rough start to the 2021 NFL Season. New QB and offseason signing, Ryan Fitzpatrick, went down with an injury in the first half of week one. While I think Fitzpatrick will ultimately be the downfall for this team, he is a veteran who has been in this league for a while. Taylor Heinicke came in as the backup but could not get the victory against the Chargers. Heinicke made his second career start last night against the Giants and brought home the victory. He looked good against a solid Giants’ defense, but the question must be asked, should Washington still target another quarterback?

Heinicke deserves his flowers. After some people like myself thought his game against the Bucs last year was a fluke, he followed it up last night with a solid performance. Heinicke went 34/46 for 336 yards, two touchdowns and his only mistake of the night was a poorly timed interception. The guy is mobile and can make all the throws but there is something about him that shines brighter than his tangible skills. Heinicke is a player, the moment does not seem to be too bright for the kid, he doesn’t rush into his throws and has an incredible amount of confidence.

The cause for concern for Heinicke is his ceiling. He threw for over 300 yards and two touchdowns and almost lost the game. The WFT should have rolled the Giants and had it not been for a Dexter Lawrence offsides call, this game would have had a different outcome.

Who Should They Go After?

There is one name that makes a lot of sense for Washington to target at the QB position. Whether it be before the trade deadline or next offseason, I think Jimmy Garoppolo is a great fit in Washington. Garoppolo has become an underrated QB in this league and when healthy is a much better player than Fitzpatrick, Heinicke, or any rookie you would bring in. Jimmy G’s contract is not an issue for WFT as the only significant money they have tied up in the QB position is $10M for Fitzpatrick but that comes off the books this year.

The only way WFT gets screwed is if Jimmy G and the 49ers start winning combined with Trey Lance not being ready to take the starting role. The more he wins, the more compensation you have to give up to acquire him. Everyone saying Cam Newton, I just don’t see it. His personality is too big, he is unvaccinated and Ron Rivera had a chance to sign Cam last season and he did not.

You can win seven or eight games with Heinicke and maybe Fitzpatrick gets you to nine but are we sure nine wins gets you into the playoffs?
