Shane McClanahan Ruled Out For 2024 After TJ Surgery

Just absolutely devastating news for the Rays. I’m not sure how else to put it. Shane McClanahan has already been ruled out for the remainder of the 2023 MLB Season. Now we can make that 2024 as well. The former South Florida product is undergoing Tommy John Surgery which will take him out through all of next year.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times was the first to report the news:

McClanahan, 26, will undergo TJ surgery for the second time in his baseball career. The first time came way back during his freshman collegiate season at South Florida. Given that this is his second go around, I’m sure the Rays will want to be extra cautious here. Cautious to the point where he may miss the start of 2025 too. That’s a possibility that can’t be ruled out.

The Rays pitching staff has been hit really hard by the injury bug. Shane Baz hasn’t pitched an inning this year. Both Jeffrey Springs (link) and Drew Rasmussen are done for the season as well. Losing McClanahan could be the nail in the coffin that tanks the Rays season. That’s not even including the wacky news that came out about Wander Franco.

This is one of the best pitchers in the sport. McClanahan made the All-Star team this year while sporting an ERA of 3.29 over 21 starts. He’s also 11-2 on the season if you care about records.

Tampa will still have to carry McClanahan on the 40-man roster this offseason but are free to place him on the 60-Day IL once Spring Training opens. This team has been hit with a sledgehammer over and over again yet still remain firmly in the playoff mix. I’m just not sure they’re much of a World Series contender without the horse McClanahan on the postseason staff. Keep in mind, that applies to next season too.
