Seattle Seahawks Training Camp Preview 2022

It was made very clear this offseason that the Seattle Seahawks are in full rebuild mode, notably trading star QB, Russell Wilson, to the Broncos in March. Now, with a roster nowhere near contending and playing in a difficult division, this leaves the Seahawks with their eyes on the No. 1 overall pick in next year’s draft. But we mustn’t look that far ahead, as we are now just upon training camp. What will the Seattle Seahawks training camp look like? Let’s dive into it.

Three Position Battles to Watch

Quarterback: Drew Lock, Geno Smith, Jacob Eason

Let’s be honest, no one really knows who is starting Week 1 for this Seahawks team. Ideally, they would start the younger, more agile Drew Lock. However, Geno Smith has plenty of starting experience and honestly, Jacob Eason is a dark horse in this race, too. I would not be surprised if any one of these three guys started at any given point during the year, but it will be fascinating to watch who earns the starting nod for the season opener against the Broncos.

Right Tackle: Abraham Lucas, Stone Forsythe, Jake Curhan

With left tackle all but wrapped up by this year’s first-round pick in Charles Cross, there should be an open competition for right tackle. There is a case to be made that both tackle spots will be filled by rookies in Cross and Abraham Lucas, the team’s third-round pick, but don’t count out Jake Curhan. Curhan started five games last year and filled in quite nicely. He is a pass-protection liability, but his run blocking is solid. The wild card here is Stone Forsythe. Once thought of as a top-tier prospect in the college game, his struggles at Florida rolled over into the pros as well. If he can take a leap, there is real competition on our hands.

Outside CB: Sidney Jones, Tariq Woolen, Coby Bryant, Artie Burns

While the Legion of Boom era may be long gone, don’t sleep on some of these CBs in Seattle. This will be a pivotal Seattle Seahawks training camp battle because the receivers in the division are monsters. I was high on Coby Bryant during the draft, and I think he nabs one of these spots. I believe the other goes to Sidney Jones. The pairing will grow throughout the year and could become quite formidable come late in the season.

Ready To Breakout: TE Noah Fant

Noah Fant was acquired in the Wilson trade mentioned above, and I think that he has a chance to really break out in Seattle. Yes, the QB quality will not be good, but bad QBs always default to their TEs. Fant is likely to see 100+ targets this season and has a chance to really shine in this offense. With free agency two years away, he has a unique chance to really make a name for himself and set himself up for a massive payday in 2024.

Rookie To Watch: Kenneth Walker III

The last few years, thanks in part to injuries to Chris Carson, it has kind of been running back by committee in Seattle. With Kenneth Walker III coming into the fold, I believe he has a real chance to earn reps early and earn them often.
