Is Sean McVay Hinting at When He Might Retire?

“F Them Picks” has become a trademark for the Los Angeles Rams. Head coach Sean McVay has stood behind that and changed the dynamic of the Rams’ organization, who are coming off a Super Bowl win. However, it appears his head coaching days could be over sooner than we thought.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported that McVay is likely to retire once Matthew Stafford, Aaron Donald, Cooper Kupp and Jalen Ramsey are no longer with the team.

“I think there’s also an acknowledgment—this is something that I’ve talked about the last few months—Sean McVay’s future with the team is probably tied to those four guys,” Breer said on The Rich Eisen Show. “In all likelihood, when those guys are gone, McVay is going to be gone, too.

You can’t really blame McVay, despite only being 36 years old. He already made a name for himself when he became the youngest NFL head coach in the modern era when the Rams brought him in at the age of 30. He’s also the youngest coach to win a Super Bowl, which the Rams did last year.

The future of this organization isn’t very bright either. The Rams don’t have a first-round draft pick until 2024, and they almost got rid of that too. Before the trade deadline on Nov. 1, the team attempted to acquire defensive star Brian Burns from the Panthers. The Rams offered their 2024 and 2025 first-rounders for Burns, which was turned down by Carolina.

So clearly this team isn’t built for long-term success. The present isn’t very promising either, as injuries and other near retirements have come up. Stafford is 34 and has been dealing with a nagging right elbow which isn’t ideal for an old quarterback. Kupp is battling an ankle injury which he’s actively trying to push through. Donald nearly retired after the Super Bowl last year and only stayed because he got a new contract. Ramsey is just burnt toast with a long contract.

Though Kupp and Ramsey have long-term contracts, but Donald and Stafford won’t be in the NFL much longer. The Rams are also currently in third place in the NFC West with a 3-4 record. McVay doesn’t have a reason to stay for years and watch a full-on rebuild happen.

McVay loves football and has said he’d love to coach for decades. But burnout worries McVay, and he doesn’t want to do this into his 60s and 70s.

“If I was to put a timeline on it, I am nowhere close to not wanting to coach football,” McVay told Rich Eisen in May. ” I love coaching so much. The question was asked if I was going to be a lifer in coaching, and then I elaborated on I don’t know if I see myself doing this until I’m 70.”

In all honestly, McVay doesn’t have much more to prove. He’s in his mid-30s with a chance to retire after winning a ring and a fat paycheck. He already has a career lined up in TV as well.

Amazon reportedly pursued McVay hard for a spot in the TV booth for Thursday Night Footballoffering him up to $100 million to leave coaching. McVay turned it down, but I’m sure the offer will still be there. He’ll be a young Jon Gruden on steroids.

It would still be shocking to hear such a young head coach call it quits, but like I said, what more does he have to prove? McVay has a legacy in L.A., and it would be better for him to leave before those lack of draft picks catches up and screw up the Rams.
