After releasing an apology for previous “mistakes,” Sammy Sosa has been welcomed back into the fold by the Chicago Cubs. His full statement can be read below, per ESPN’s Jesse Rogers.
Notably, Sosa did not explicitly confess to using performance-enhancing substances, something he has long been suspected of. He instead alluded to “times I did whatever I could to recover from injuries in an effort to keep my strength up to perform over 162 games.” Regardless, the apology was enough for the Chicago Cubs.
Shortly after Sosa’s apology, Tom Ricketts, Executive Chairman of the Chicago Cubs, released a statement on behalf of the organization, inviting Sosa to the 2025 Cubs Convention.
“We appreciate Sammy releasing his statement and for reaching out. No one played harder or wanted to win more. Nobody’s perfect but we never doubted his passion for the game and the Cubs. It is an understatement to say that Sammy is a fan favorite. We plan on inviting him to the 2025 Cubs Convention and, while it is short notice, we hope that he can attend. We are all ready to move forward together.”
Ricketts has often said Sammy Sosa would not be welcomed back by the Cubs until he apologized. The organization and the fan-favorite slugger had a falling out, stemming from Sosa’s infamous refusal to play in the final game of the 2004 season, as well as a heavy cloud of suspicion surrounding his alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs.
Over his 18-year MLB career with the Cubs, White Sox, Rangers, and Orioles, Sammy Sosa compiled 609 home runs and 1,667 RBI. The Dominican masher won the National League MVP award in 1998. He is a seven-time All-Star and six-time Silver Slugger. Sosa is the only player in MLB history to hit 60 homers in three different seasons, doing so in 1998, 1999, and 2001. Although he ranks ninth all-time in home runs, PED suspicion has ultimately kept Sosa out of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
The 2025 Cubs Convention will take place in January at the Sheraton Grand Chicago hotel.
