Saints Happy Drew Brees Accepted Team Friendly Extension

Drew Brees has been a team player for New Orleans on and off the field. Brees helped with efforts after Hurrican Katrina and has now donated $5 million to COVID-19 pandemic relief efforts in the state of Louisiana. Brees has been a godsend of a child for this area. Brees hasn’t just been selfless in the community, he really helped out his team this offseason too.

Saints GM Mickey Loomis expressed gratitude towards Brees for his willingness to accept a team-friendly contract extension:

“We needed to know what Drew was going to count on our (salary) cap this year, what resources are we using because then that gives us the ability to do some other things,” Loomis told the team’s website. “To Drew’s credit, his No. 1 goal was to make sure we had an opportunity to improve our roster, keep our roster together and be as competitive as we can be. I’m certainly appreciative of how he’s handled that contract the last couple times because again the most important thing to him is we have a competitive team.”

The Saints have done just that. The deal Brees signed allowed them to improve the team. Malcolm Jenkins and Emmanuel Sanders were both signed this offseason. Taysom Hill, David Onyemata, and Andrus Peat were retained. The only player the Saints lost was Vonn Bell who was replaced by Jenkins. The Saints don’t have many holes on their roster. It’s one of the best rosters in the NFL and only got better this offseason.

Drew Brees signed a 2-year deal worth $50 million this offseason. No, Brees won’t cry poor but he really did the team a solid. Compare that to what Ryan Tannehill got. Tom Brady signed for a similar dollar figure but Brees’ deal is more cap-friendly because of prorated bonuses figured into the contract. I still think the Saints should have thought about keeping Teddy Bridgewater instead, but signing Brees to this deal makes the decision a lot easier to swallow.
