Rory McIlroy Sniped His Father With His Approach Shot

Everyone loves Rory McIlroy, but his own father might not after today unless Rory makes the cut at The Masters this weekend. McIlroy fired his approach shot towards the far right end of the green on hole seven at Augusta National today, and I’m sure everyone was laughing except Gerry McIlroy, Rory’s father. The shanked shot slapped Gerry McIlroy in what appeared to be his lower left leg. Ouch. At least Rory was courteous to yell FORE. Based on the coverage of the unusually funny and coincidental occurrence, it should be safe to assume that Gerry is not injured. Still, getting smacked by one of your son’s balls has to be an embarrassing feeling, especially given the magnitude of the tournament he’s in.

Gerry McIlroy Is One Hell Of A Sport

In response to getting plunked by Rory’s botched approach, Gerry said he wants an autograph. What a guy.

Not surprisingly, Rory made bogey on that hole but was able to bounce back and secure the birdie on hole eight so he could win his father’s love back. After eight, he was in a tie for 45 on the leaderboards at Augusta, but you can always check back on Rory’s progress at The Masters here.

Rory McIlroy hasn’t had an amazing 2021, but this year’s 85th annual Masters tournament could be the push he needs. As long as he makes the cut and puts together a couple of good rounds between now and Saturday, he has as good a chance as anybody. Dustin Johnson (last year’s Masters winner) is the favorite to win in 2021 at 9-1 odds, but who knows if that will happen because he has not been performing well in 2021 either. This year’s Masters is up for grabs, and I would love the idea of Rory taking home another major victory, especially since he has not worn the green jacket.
