Ronald Jones To Begin Season As Bucs Starting Running Back
The Bucs backfield was a curious one for fantasy owners to try to project in 2020. Ronald Jones is pretty close to being labeled a bust but Ke’Shawn Vaughn is an unproven rookie third round pick. So which back would take the reigns as the starter? It sounds like that’s already been decided.
Jenna Laine of ESPN (ESPN+) has reported that it will be Ronald Jones that gets the first team reps. This news is unexpected but has serious fantasy implications.
Apparently Jones has impressed the coaching staff. He’s been working out and trying to improve his pass catching ability. Vaughn will obviously be in the mix for carries but this is huge news. Jones could wind up being a fantasy sleeper.
I don’t care what anybody says. The Bucs will be a more run heavy team than a year ago. Jones has a chance to outperform his current fantasy status as RB 33 according to fantasy pros. While Jones doesn’t have the best reputation in the NFL, this is a guy who was a former 2nd round pick. Jones also averaged a quiet 4.2 yards per carry in 2019.
Vaughn will obviously be in the mix for carries. However, let’s also not forget about Dare Ogunbowale who could be the James White in this new Bucs Tom Brady offense. If Vaughn is going to be fantasy relevant as a rookie, he has his work cut out for him. Jones has his role. Vaughn has to earn his. That’s not neccesarily what I anticipated.
