Reddit is a fantastic place. On Reddit, there are so many conspiracists and people that connect the dots on outlandish things that it almost makes sense. The latest one between the NBA and Reddit is that Robert Covington is a Head Coach Killer. What I mean by Head Coach Killer is that wherever he goes, that head coach gets fired. Reddit user u/rahulkumarbudhwani found the connection below. I found this via Twitter:
I understand coincidences, but how many times does it need to happen before it’s not? Now, I’ll be honest, I called for Terry Stotts’s job earlier this season. He hadn’t done much in the playoffs in previous years and it was time. However, the timing is almost too good to be true after Robert Covington got traded to the Blazers THIS year. He already had Mike D’Antoni and Tom Thibodeau fired in the years before. This is a pattern that is forming. Much like Patrick McCaw’s trend of winning championships with whatever team he was with. The real question is: What do we do with this information?
If this Reddit user is correct, should GMs use Covington as a tool to fire other head coaches? I mean, most of these coaches were well on their way to getting fired anyway, but RoCo might be a way to accelerate that process. Covington is still under contract with the Blazers for the 2021-2022 season. However, with his contract expiring after next year and being paid about 13 million makes him quite a trade piece to other teams. Thinking logically, who are the most likely candidates to get fired as a head coach?
Luke Walton with the Kings, Scott Brooks with the Wizards, Mike Budenholzer with the Bucks all come to mind. Luke Walton is a terrible coach, it’s mind-boggling to think he is still a head coach, but if that doesn’t explain the dysfunctionality of the Kings, I’m not sure what will. Slightly better than Walton is Scott Brooks, but not by much. The Wizards aren’t the most talented team, but you always feel like they’ve underwhelmed since Brooks got there. Mike Budenholzer is a great regular-season coach. But, he’s just never been able to have the playoff success the Bucks were supposed to have. If the Bucks fail again to win a championship and he’s here next year, he might be another candidate that could get fired.
Which team should Robert Covington get traded to? Which team do you want him to go to? Could this entire thing be bullshit? It doesn’t matter. I can be superstitious, so why not? If Robert Covington goes to one of these teams and they fire their head coach, is it believable? Should the Blazers use this to their advantage? They currently looking for a new head coach, and a new head coach has to fuck up royally in order to get fired, but it is not unheard of. Let’s see if Robert Covington gets a head coach fired in 2022.
