Phil Regan suing Mets for age discrimination

Phil Regan, ex-New York Mets pitching coach, is suing the Mets for age discrimination, TMZ reported Tuesday.

Regan was fired at the end of the 2019 season when the Mets finished 86-76. Famous asshole Mickey Callaway was the Mets’ manager at the time. Regan was fired at the ripe age of 82.

The former pitching coach is claiming that he was let go only due to his age.

Regan is being represented by Matthew Bilt, an employment attorney. Bilt had this to say about Regan’s firing:

“Phil is the first to crack jokes about his age,” Blit said to TMZ. “However there is nothing funny about a person being told that they are being passed over because their employer wants someone younger. That’s discrimination, plain and simple.”

Also in the report is a direct quote from Callaway to Regan.

“If we don’t find the young pitching coach we are looking for, we will hire you back.”

The Mets would go on to hire 33-year-old Jeremy Hefner.

It wasn’t just about what the Mets said to Regan, but the numbers back it up as well. The Mets’ pitching rotation all had better ERAs when Regan took over in June of 2019.

Six decades of Major League Baseball for Regan. I had to take a step back when finding that out. I mean, sixty years of coaching and playing is astounding.

But that doesn’t mean you’re always right about everything. I think that Regan and his team could frame the situation to try and pry money from the Mets, but I don’t think anything could have been done to get Regan back as the Mets’ pitching coach.

I mean the guy was 82 years old. For an organization that was trying to turn it around at the time, the last thing they wanted was an old dog trying to teach new tricks.

I’m not surprised by any of this garbage honestly. The Brodie Van Wagenen era was miserable for Mets fans. And Mickey Callaway isn’t exactly your go-to Public Relations professional.

I just want to wipe my memory clear of the Mets before 2021. Is that possible?
