Quandre Diggs is, to me, the epitome of the word ‘underrated.’ Year in and year out he continues to play like one of the league’s best safeties but fails to get the recognition he deserves. It may be because his style of play isn’t always easy to see or notice from a fan’s perspective. Or maybe it’s due to him being overshadowed by his teammate Jamal Adams after he came over from New York. Whatever the reason is, it needs to stop, and some respect needs to be put on Diggs’ name.
The lack of recognition doesn’t just come from fans, though. In ESPN’s most recent top ten safeties list in which they polled league executives, Diggs failed to make the list while his teammate Adams snuck in at 10. Adams’ addition has only seemed to allow Diggs to go further under the radar, despite the fact that he has arguably been the better safety since his arrival. Look no further than Diggs’ higher win rate for evidence.
Diggs has shown the ability to be a true ball hawk with 13 interceptions in the last two seasons — which he accomplished without the coverage volatility of Dallas’ Trevon Diggs. Through those two seasons he’s only been responsible for four touchdowns. He’s done this while also only giving up a passer rating of 55.4 in 2019 and 63.4 in 2021. Furthermore, he’s posted the second highest ranking in terms of win share in coverage last season.
Despite these metrics showing that Quandre Diggs is one of the league’s premier safeties, year after year he seems to get overlooked by fans and the NFL media and I just don’t know why.
He’s everything you could want in a true coverage safety which is why I get so confused when he’s so blatantly disregarded as one of the best in the game. Maybe it’s because he started his career in Detroit and then moved to a Seattle team that almost immediately started rebuilding. Or again, maybe it’s a result of the Adams addition. Or maybe it’s because he’s been unable to actually play in the last two Pro Bowls he’s been voted into. And it could be a combination of all three, but what I do know is that it needs to stop soon because Diggs is easily one of the best safeties in the NFL.
