Kyrie Irving has spoken and he wants Kenny Atkinson fired. That’s not the news that came out, I’m just guessing. That or Atkinson said screw this, I’m out. Either way, Kenny Atkinson is no longer the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. A shocking piece of news to start out the morning.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN was the first to report the news:
The Nets also put out a press release:
“After discussions with Kenny about the progress of the season, we mutually agreed that a coaching change would be in the best interest of the team,” Nets general manager Sean Marks said in a statement. “This was an extremely difficult decision, however the organization believes it is one that is necessary at this time. Kenny was instrumental in developing our players and building the identity and culture we have become known for over these past four seasons. The foundation he helped put into place here is one that we will continue to build on in the coming seasons.”
This is shocking news because the Nets are still very alive in the playoff hunt. After being the 6th seed in the East last year, Brooklyn took a step back, but that was a given. They lost D’Angelo Russell. They added Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant. Kyrie has barely played and Durant hasn’t played at all. Of course, they weren’t going to be good.
This felt like a lost season the whole time. Then again, they were still giving DeAndre Jordan minutes over Jarrett Allen. On no planet does that make sense. The dysfunction is starting to set in on what was such a young growing team a year ago.
