NBA 2k23 – What We Know and What We Want

NBA 2K23

(@NBA2K official Twitter account)

Fall is approaching, and that means a new 2K game coming out. I played 2K a decent amount this year, and the game was solid. However, there were some things I did not like. 2K could potentially fix them for next season, though. Here are the things we know and want for NBA 2K23.

What We Know

Release Date/Cover Athlete

NBA 2K23 will be released in early September, as it has in previous years. This fall, it will be released on September 9th.

In terms of the Cover Athlete, there will be 4 different ones. For the Standard Edition ($70 PS5/Xbox S/X), $60 PS4/Xbox 1), it will be Suns guard Devin Booker, who led them to the NBA Finals in 2021. 2K has had a tendency of putting younger players on the cover, with Zion in 2k21, Luka in 2k22, and now Devin Booker in 2k23. For the WNBA edition, it will be Diana Tarusi and Sue Bird (same as above, but this is only physical copies). Lastly, there are 2 exclusive versions of the game, the Digital Deluxe Edition ($100) and the Championship Edition ($150). Both of these will grace a basketball legend and icon, Michael Jordan. There will be a bunch of preorder bonuses for any game you get. All of them except for the WNBA edition include VC, MyTeam and MyCareer things, and some wearable items in the park. Finally for the Championship edition, you get a bunch of things plus a year subscription to NBA Gamepass. This is a cool feature 2K added, and I wish other sports games did something like it.

What We Want

Remove the Got Next Spot

When I played park with friends, there would be a very long wait to start some games because of the Got Next Spot. We would travel around the park looking for a game, find a court, and have to wait 5 minutes to start our game. That part was very boring. However, there is a simple fix. Take out the Got Next spot, and replace the method with how they do Events/Old Gym. Essentially how it worked was in the Events you could squad up and instantly find a game. For the Old Gym, it would place you with 2 other randoms, but there would be no squads.

Bring Back MyCourt

I don’t see why 2K removed this from their game. MyCourt was essentially a way to play on your own or with your friends, but in your apartment. You can customize the look of everything on the court, from baskets to wall pictures, it was a cool feature. Some people also used it to practice their dribble moves and shot timing. It was almost like a personal gym. I enjoyed the 2s and 3s games with my friends on MyCourt without any distractions.

Bring Back One Archetype Builds

This is one I have been striving for all this year. The main concept is that by giving hybrid builds, you allow hybrid players. An example is that you can create a 6’8 lockdown glitch build (using the metric system to get better stats) that can essentially do everything. It was very toxic to play against. With one archetype builds, you have to sacrifice something in the game. For example, a player like Steph Curry can shoot the 3, but is not as good at interior paint defense. Yes, you will get a LeBron type player every once in a while, but even he has some struggles. I think one archetype builds would freshen the game from what it was last year and allow players to enjoy the game again.

Get Rid of Dunk Timing

Lastly, I think they should get rid of dunk timing. Yes, there is a skill gap in learning the timings of each dunk, but it forces everyone to play the same way. A lot of the people I played against would sit in the corner and drain 3s. Everyone would use the lockdown build I talked about above, and they could guard everyone. It made slashers unusable, and that took the fun away. I think a good solution would be to implement thresholds. Allow a skill rating to prove if I’m able to do something or not. For example, 90+ contact dunk on a 75 interior defense rating should get dunked on 95% of the time.

I think NBA 2K23 has a lot of potential, if they play their cards right. 2K22 was not horrible, but it could use some work. I think if the developers listen to the community, they will make a game that people will buy and enjoy playing.
