Heading into the 2022 NFL season, the Denver Broncos will have Melvin Gordon and Javonte Williams competing for carries. Conventional wisdom tells you that the 22-year-old Williams will see a boost in carries during his second season but the veteran Gordon is not ready to give up his touches.
Gordon spoke with reporters Monday and explained he understands most everyone expects him “to take a back seat,” via The Athletic’s Nick Kosmider, but he said he told Broncos general manager George Paton, “I’m not going to lay down” in a training camp — or in-season, for that matter — competition for carries.

Last season, Gordan and Williams split carries in the Broncos’ backfield. Both backs had 203 carries with similar levels of production. Gordon had a slight edge with 918 yards and eight touchdowns to Williams’ 903 yards and four touchdowns.
In the offseason, Gordon was a free agent and had the option to jump ship. Instead, he opted to stay in town as he signed a one-year deal that can pay him as much as $5 million.
Despite Gordon not wanting to lose carries to Williams, he may not have a choice. Williams appears to have a lot of potential and the Broncos will give him an opportunity to reach his ceiling. Williams becoming the starter in Denver has been evident for a while now.
Even if Williams is the starting back, Gordon should be able to find a role with the Broncos. At a minimum, Gordon will be the backup in Denver. That does not seem great, but the Broncos’ new head coach Nathaniel Hackett, formerly the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers, has proven that he will give the backup some carries.
Gordon is probably right. He will not lay down and give Williams all of the carries. However, the chances of him seeing 200 carries in 2022 is very unlikely.
