Premier League winners Manchester City are gearing up for another expensive summer transfer window. Pep Guardiola has his eyes on two English attackers that would add even more firepower to an already elite attacking arsenal. The Spanish manager also is interested in a rival side’s right back that would provide both youth and strength to the backline at City. Let’s get into it.
Despite Tottenham’s insistence on keeping Kane at the club for the duration of his contract – 3 more years – chairman Daniel Levy has set the striker’s price tag at nearly £150 million ($208.1 million). The hefty price tag would break the Premier League record transfer fee set by Paul Pogba and Manchester United five years ago by £60 million. Kane’s addition at City would provide Guardiola with a surefire no. 1 option at striker – something he’s been lacking for the past few seasons. But according to Manchester Evening News’ Stuart Brennan, City would be willing to move on from Kane if the price expectations don’t become more “realistic.” With Sergio Aguero already gone and Gabriel Jesus potentially on his way out, City are in desperate need of a striker and the Englishmen’s 37 goals and assists from last season would be quite the addition.
Grealish is one of the big names on the market this summer, but City may be one of the few squads able to splash the cash on Aston Villa’s hefty price tag. According to ESPN, City are “ready to pay around £100 million ($139m) for the midfielder.” Villa’s tag may be negotiable, but its pricing shouldn’t come as a shock. The Premier League side struggled when the winger was out with a shinbone injury in the spring, winning only three out of the 12 matches he missed. But if City are willing to pay Grealish’s tag, Villa could take the money and spend it on talent both inside and outside the club. It will be interesting to see if the talks go further or if Grealish will suit up in burgundy and baby blue for another season.
Guardiola’s interest in Chelsea right back Reece James isn’t a shock since he had a front row seat to watch James control the right side of the field in the Champions League final in May. The young Englishman held Raheem Sterling in check for the entirety of the game and dealt well with the flanking threats City posed throughout the full 90 minutes. Guardiola is a “huge admirer” of James according to The Athletic’s Simon Johnson with the Spaniard adding him to his wanted list. However, the reality is that the right back is a Chelsea academy graduate, a recently crowned Champions League winner, and the signee of a five-year deal at his boyhood club, meaning a transfer to City is unlikely. This move would be beyond shocking, but, who knows, it could happen.
Manchester City will be on the prowl this transfer window, and the English giants will be looking to bolster their squad for another Premier League and Champions League title run. Whether Kane, Grealish, and James are a part of that side is yet to be determined.
