Was there ever any even doubt? Luka Doncic was going to be great. Even when he was playing for the Real Madrid team at 16, you already knew he was going to be a star. He led the Real Madrid team to a title 2 years later and won the EuroLeague MVP award. Coincidentally, he was 18 when all that happened, which made for great draft stock. Knowing then what we know now, Luka Doncic should of went 1st or even 2nd in the NBA draft no question. The Dallas Mavericks did right by trading up for him. He wouldn’t have made it to 5, where the Mavericks originally picked.
Yes, I know it’s been one season, I don’t care, this kid is special. He averaged 21.2 PPG on 42.7% shooting, 6 APG, and 7.8 RPG AS A ROOKIE. Not even a 21-year rookie or anything like that, a 19-year-old rookie. He’s already off to a blazing this start RPG in his second season by putting up a whopping stat line of 34 PPG, 3 APG, 9 RPG. Look to him to only continue to get better as his role and skill only increases from here on out.
Luka Doncic was always going to be a great player. A couple of days ago, I wrote that Nikola Jokic is well on his way to being the best international player ever, but don’t think that Jokic doesn’t have competition. I’m not talking about the retired ghosts either. There’s talents like Luka Doncic, who is gonna give him a run for his money. With the NBA going more global, with or without China, there will only be more international talent like Nikola Jokic or Luka Doncic. International talents are extremely beneficial to the NBA and well to the fans themselves. Hell, we just had our first Japanese player drafted in the NBA draft in 2019. Luka Doncic is going to be a star in the league, just sit back and enjoy the ride.
