Kyrie Irving Wants A Contract Extension From The Nets
Kyrie Irving is on his best behavior which magically is taking place during a contract year. Irving is in the final year of his deal and will become a free agent after the 2022-23 NBA Season. Despite all the early-season trade rumors, the Nets are actually competent. Brooklyn is 4th in the East currently trying to stay afloat as Kevin Durant remains out.
Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report put out a report that states Irving is very content in Brooklyn and would love to get a contract extension worked out. It’s a matter of if the Nets are willing to sign up for another season of the Kyrie rollercoaster.
“Around Kyrie and staying with the Nets? I have reached out to the Nets regarding this,” said his agent, Shetellia Irving. “We have had no significant conversations to date. The desire is to make Brooklyn home, with the right type of extension, which means the ball is in the Nets’ court to communicate now if their desire is the same.”
Irving, 30, is averaging 26.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 5.0 assists through 35 games. Safe to say Kyrie is playing well and there hasn’t been any nonsense this year since the COVID restrictions have been removed. The more important question may be if the Nets are willing to do this again, what’s the line in the sand?
Are the Nets really willing to give him another multi-year max extension? That part seems to be far from a guarantee. A potential max contract for Irving would pay him roughly $200 million over the next four years. Hard to see how the Nets go that far given the past. It wasn’t long ago that the Nets suspended Kyrie earlier this season.
