Jurgen Klopp Will be Staying at Liverpool for a While
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has signed a contract extension to stay at the Merseyside club until at least 2026.
Klopp has been at Liverpool since 2015 following his departure from Borussia Dortmund. In his time in charge of Liverpool, Klopp has been outstanding and ended two long droughts. First, in 2019, Klopp led Liverpool to their first UEFA Champions League title since 2005. Then the following season Klopp led Liverpool to their first-ever Premier League championship and their first league title since 1990.
This season has been one of Klopp’s most successful at the helm of Liverpool as they are attempting to complete the quadruple by winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and the EFL Cup. As of now, Liverpool has only won the EFL Cup after beating Chelsea on penalties, but they sit second in the Premier League one point behind leaders Manchester City, are in the semifinals of the Champions League and are in the final of the FA Cup.
“There are so many words I could use to describe how I am feeling about this news… delighted, humbled, blessed, privileged and excited would be a start,” said Klopp in an interview with LiverpoolFC.com. “There is just so much to love about this place.”
The German manager had his contract set to end in 2024 but will be staying on for a few more years. He will not be the only member of the coaching staff staying as two of his assistants, Pepijn Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, have agreed to stay on through 2026.
Liverpool was the third team Klopp has managed following the end of his playing career in 2001. He started out at Mainz 05 where he played virtually his entire career before moving to Borussia Dortmund.
The news of an extension comes the day after Liverpool won the first leg of their Champions League semifinal against Villareal 2-0. Up next for The Reds is a trip to Newcastle on Saturday with a chance to move ahead of Manchester City.
