The family of Blackfeet Chief John Two Guns Whitecalf, whose likeness was used by the Washington Redskins for 48 seasons, wants the team to go back to its old name and logo. The team now goes by the name Washington Commanders, and before that, the Washington Football team. The team changed its long-standing name to the Redskins in 2020 after years of pressure from the public and sponsors.
Changing the name back may not be as much of a pipe dream as it seems, as the family now has support at the federal level. The family of the Blackfeet Chief, who is from Montana, has support from their local state senator, Steve Daines, a member of the Republican party. The Family also seems to have support from the Commanders themselves. A Commander’s spokesperson said, “We are collaborating with Sen. Daines to honor the legacy of our team’s heritage and the Native American community,” in a statement sent to Fox News.
The Commanders were recently purchased by a new group of investors in 2023. This group of investors is headed by Josh Harris, who also owns the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA and the New Jersey Devils of the NHL. This group of owners seems to be willing to hear the family of John Two Guns Whitecalf out. This is a promising start for the family of the iconic Blackfeet chief.
John Two Guns Whitecalf’s likeness also inspired the 1913 Indian head nickel. He also advocated for Native American rights and social issues, engaging with President Calvin Coolidge.
Although it seems like there is progress towards returning the moniker ‘Redskins,” many think it is still doubtful. According to Fox News, someone close to the topic says that the name Redskins is still a touchy subject in politics. A line from The Grinch makes me think of the Redskins name fiasco. “I wouldn’t touch you with a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole.” I think this is how many politicians and other professionals feel about the topic.
