This running back class is so loaded that Jarquez Hunter is essentially being forgotten about. Something I didn’t expect to say that three years ago, I can promise you that. Anywho… we have lots to talk about so let’s get to the 2025 NFL Draft profile on the Auburn running back.
NFL Draft Stock Report: Week 2, Week 5, Week 14, Senior Bowl (3), Game
Hunter, 22, was a three star prospect out of the state of Mississippi during the 2021 cycle. 2021 and 2022, he was the primary backup behind Tank Bigsby and really flashed in that role. He was on my radar almost immediately, sporting a 6.7 YPC mark as a freshman.
The former Auburn product took over as the main starter in 2023 and 2024. Has always been an efficient runner. Posted 909 yards on 159 carries and seven scores last year. This past year, Hunter ripped off 1,201 yards on 187 carries and eight scores. Hunter has real receiving production too. Can definitely contribute in that area.
I’ll say this about Hunter. This is not a guy who shies away from contact. Has real power in the lower body and you can tell he puts work into the weight room. 21 bench press reps is a really good sign of that work ethic and his legs in terms of churning for additional yardage is there.
Except you combine that with 4.44 speed and you may really have something here. Again, I really like this player. He’s just not perfect. I’ll share my Combine notes here. Sometimes he leaves you wanting more, but the tools are there to turn into something. Very compact and can chip in on special teams in the return game if you need someone for that role. Short area burst isn’t quite there but he doesn’t mess around and hits the hole hard.
I actually kinda like Jarquez Hunter. I don’t like him as much as I liked Tank Bigsby but I think he’s maybe a notch or two right below that. He’s one who is a late round guy for me. Not perfect, but certainly can play. Depending on how far he falls, this is a player I’m in on.
